A fitting match in a therapist to work through & find pathways that allow for letting go, grief work & transformation.
CALL Office: Adults & Seniors: Individual & Couple: The imprint of trauma is psychological, body and brain memory long after the events are over, one continues to respond as if danger were ever present. The therapy mission is to bring this understanding of trauma to Adult and Seniors, via psychotherapy, looking for answers to healing traumatic events. The key to healing is not just knowing what happened but transforming how Behavior, mind, body,& soul still store it. Trauma can reveal itself via depression, anxiety, despair, conflict ,lack of resolve, patterns of repetition ,worn out "survival mode defenses" from earlier times.

Frustrated about school or work? Concerned about issues of gender and sexuality? Stuck in repetitive self-defeating choices and behaviors? Sometimes thoughts and feelings that are not yet fully in our awareness can contribute significantly to our problems. My training as a psychoanalyst enables me to listen deeply and help you integrate pushed-away, split-off parts of yourself. That integration can make profound and lasting change possible.

A lot of thought can go into choosing a therapist for you or your family member. Therapy starts with a unique personal relationship that has appropriate professional boundaries and allows you to explore your present dilemma and its relationship to your inner life. With children I use play and talk. With older adolescents and adults therapy is primarily verbal but it is always important to keep a sense of playful exploration even when facing difficult or painful issues. If this approach sounds right for you contact me to set up an initial visit. I am only working virtually via Zoom and no longer working with children under 12.

How do I effectuate change? I believe change occurs from a sustained active approach with the therapist. Why is there a need for change? Many people report affective states of anxiety, depression, and stress that are inhibiting them in their work, personal lives, and enjoyment of life. My education and experience put me in a unique position to give people the understanding to find satisfaction from their personal, family and work life. Therapeutic interactions are in the here and now. Understanding often leads to an improved quality of life; alleviating anxiety, depressive feelings as well as fears of being stuck.

I believe that most children and adolescents can benefit from connecting with another adult to help them sort through their struggles, even short-term. Working in schools for the past 18 years has taught me how to work collaboratively with all the people in your child's life to help them to achieve success. I am able to see the "whole child" as a result, and treat accordingly. I have found that child and adolescent therapists are few and far between, and I hope to be a resource to you.

Deciding to see a therapist requires awareness and regard for oneself. I have deep respect for what has brought you here, and this will form the foundation of our work together. Perhaps you seek therapy now because of a crisis that is presenting new challenges or bringing up old, unresolved problems. Or you now feel ready to address a long-standing pattern that has caused much difficulty and pain over time. These burdens may be affecting not only your relationships with others but also how you relate to yourself. My job is to help you expand your capacity for what you can do alone.

I work with adults and adolescents who face the usual and unusual problems that arise from living, and who wish to deeply explore what matters most in their lives. As a lifelong student/teacher/writer on mindfulness and psychotherapy, many clients wish to draw on mindfulness practice and understanding in our work together. However, I am well trained over the course of many decades in a breadth of techniques, and draw on a range of approaches as we collaborate on the question of "what works" in therapy and life itself.

Personal life transitions, relationship challenges, and school or career junctures present ideal opportunities to engage a therapist. By developing self-awareness and committing to improving outcomes in one's work and personal life, individuals often achieve far more than they'd previously imagined. As a psychologist and coach, I integrate the use of inquiry, insight, creative problem-solving, thoughtful self-reflection, hands-on "homework" assignments, and honest conversation. I will fully engage with you as a thought partner, a sounding board, and a confidential resource to help you alleviate stress and reach your potential.

I know how difficult it is to make that phone call and admit that you need help. Because of my personality, education and experience, I am able to make people feel comfortable to finally open up to someone and to let me help them. The quality of the therapeutic relationship is more important than any theoretical approach and it is this relationship that I focus on nurturing and it is this relationship that keeps clients coming back through the years, when they encounter hardships.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
