in Clinical Psychology and additional training as a Child and Adult Psychoanalyst.
I have been in practice for 25 years and work in my private, comfortable home office. People find me easy to talk to and often say I have the right balance between empathy and challenging them when necessary. People come to therapy because they are having difficulties handling their emotions in their work (or school) and personal relationships. As an Adult and Child Psychoanalyst, I have considerable experience working with a wide range of people from 3 years old and up to mature adulthood. I particularly like working with preschoolers, under-achieving "gifted" children , seemingly "lost" adolescents, adults and Seniors dealing with aging and retirement.

I believe that most children and adolescents can benefit from connecting with another adult to help them sort through their struggles, even short-term. Working in schools for the past 18 years has taught me how to work collaboratively with all the people in your child 's life to help them to achieve success. I am able to see the "whole child " as a result, and treat accordingly. I have found that child and adolescent therapists are few and far between, and I hope to be a resource to you.

I specialize in neuropsychological and psychological evaluation of children and adults (ages 4 and up). Testing can be helpful in determining someone's unique cognitive and emotional profile. Testing is often helpful in determining diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning Disorders, and Emotional or Behavioral Disorders. As part of the process, I work closely with educational and outpatient providers.

I also treat families having difficulties with their children .
How do I effectuate change? I believe change occurs from a sustained active approach with the therapist. Why is there a need for change? Many people report affective states of anxiety, depression, and stress that are inhibiting them in their work, personal lives, and enjoyment of life. My education and experience put me in a unique position to give people the understanding to find satisfaction from their personal, family and work life. Therapeutic interactions are in the here and now. Understanding often leads to an improved quality of life; alleviating anxiety, depressive feelings as well as fears of being stuck.

CBT really works! Especially when you are working with a trained and experienced therapist. I hold advanced certification in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and use this approach exclusively. Together we will work to improve your insight, mood and motivation. You will learn what influences your mood and decision-making, and how ways of thinking and doing can lead to feeling stuck and hopeless. In addition to CBT, I can teach you powerful skills to improve distress tolerance and emotional regulation. These are skills you will learn to use now, and can rely on in the future. Let's get started!

I draw on a range of approaches, helping my clients improve self-esteem, enhance relationship skills and develop effective coping strategies. In a goal-focused, collaborative way, informed by my training as a psychoanalyst, I help my clients understand and modify ineffective relational and behavioral patterns. I conceptualize clients' struggles in a holistic and integrative way, as I integrate cognitive-behavioral approaches with dynamic theory to bring about real change. Using a mix of cognitive, behavioral, and insight-oriented strategies, I have been successful in helping clients better manage relationships, anxiety & depression.

I am a graduate of Boston Psychoanalytic Institute and on the faculty of the Adult and Child Psychotherapy Programs.
I have over 35 years experience working with children , youth, adults and couples. I help patients identify, focus and attend to what really matters to them and help them understand how to deepen their relationships. Many problems emerge in actual therapy sessions so that problem solving together can occur in the present. I work with people weekly and sometimes multiple times per week given my belief that change comes about from a earnest commitment to understanding ourselves. I help children and adults recognize their unique ways of thinking and experiencing relationships, and how self understanding promotes change and makes a happier and healthier life.

Academy MetroWest provides weekly group therapy sessions that meet in a gymnasium setting. Groups use cooperative, non-competitive physical activity as a means of helping children enhance social skills and self-image. Owing to the social skills focus of the program, our most commonly encountered presenting problems are ADHD, Asperger's Disorder, NvLD, and other issues in which social skills delays figure prominently. We work with children aged 6 - 15.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
