In my work as a therapist, my first priority is to establish a comfortable, respectful working relationship that will allow my clients to begin to focus on the often difficult, painful and complex feelings, issues and situations that have brought them to counseling. My role is to listen carefully and thoughtfully, and to help guide and facilitate discussions that will help my clients to grow and change in beneficial ways, to resolve important conflicts and issues, and to reduce the severity of symptoms such as anxiety, depressed mood and difficulty managing anger.

Many of my patients are recovering from addictions of various sorts. Many of them, as well as other patients, have mood disorders (anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder). I also work with individuals and families struggling with problems in work and career, marriage and similar relationships, and what are often described as existential or spiritual crises--the lack of a sense of meaning and purpose in life. I involve families in therapy when possible--people don't live and learn as isolated individuals.

Many people come to therapy because something in their lives no longer feels sustainable. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, or recurring conflicts in relationships that leave you feeling frustrated, stuck, or misunderstood. Sometimes people also have a sense that certain emotional patterns keep repeating, but it can be difficult to understand why. In our work together, we would explore the thoughts, feelings, and life experiences that may be shaping the challenges you are facing now. As this understanding develops, many people gain greater clarity, improved relationships, and a stronger sense of direction in life.

You look like you’re holding it together, but inside you’re just trying to hang on. You feel overwhelmed, worn down by stress and anxiety, alone—and you're not sure how to make things better. Maybe you’re a high schooler navigating anxiety, uncertainty and growing pains, or an adult longing for peace and healthier relationships. You want your life to improve—but you also want to understand yourself more deeply and how you got here. Therapy can help. Together, we’ll make sense of what’s going on so you can find relief, hope, and start feeling like yourself again.

I've worked in schools for twenty seven years, helping an array of children and teens experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as social, emotional, and academic challenges. I believe that young people are all amazing in their own ways. Children benefit from having someone in their corner unconditionally to help develop skills and strategies in an effort to become increasingly confident, independent, and successful both in and out of school. I value communication with parents to best help each client. I approach all of my clients in a warm and compassionate manner in an effort to develop a strong connection.

In a world that often demands so much from us, it can be hard to find room to simply pause and tend to ourselves. Whether you're feeling anxious, disconnected, overwhelmed, or even stuck, I believe that healing and self-growth starts with connection and the fostering of a warm, nonjudgmental space that meets you where you are. Each person brings their own world to therapy, and that necessitates a deep commitment to culturally sensitive, affirming, and ultimately genuine care. In working together, my goal is to help improve your quality of life while also providing a base for self-exploration.

I named my practice "Confluence Psychotherapy" because a confluence is the point when two rivers meet - a point when together what has been separate becomes fuller, deeper, more powerful together. Like a moment when you lose yourself in dance or play, the right connection can help us to find what we need in unexpected and surprising ways. Good therapy can be like that - at times difficult but in the end, exhilarating. I specialize in working through trauma of all forms with older teens and adults of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds.

I’m Howie Schnairsohn, Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and Certified Group Psychotherapist. I lead groups for both young adults (20’s, 30’s) and early career Mental Health Professionals. Both groups, serving different populations, share the unique feature of learning and growing via the interaction with other group members. In the ‘professionals’ group, we deal with burn out, and the so called ‘imposter syndrom”- we also get to strengthen our emotional muscle by having, recognizing, and expressing feelings.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
