I have been working as a child and
adolescent
psychotherapist for over 25 years, addressing a myriad of issues that keep children from reaching their full potential. Through play therapy, discussion, improving family communication, and teaching coping strategies, I am able to form trusting relationships with my clients that allow them to overcome challenges. I have helped many children and adolescents improve their self esteem, make better choices, cope with depression and anxiety, stop self-harm, navigate school problems, and improve social interactions. I also work with parents to help them achieve greater harmony with children.

If you are interested in helping your child or
adolescent
improve their academic and social emotional functioning, have an
adolescent
who is experiencing Anxiety, or would like an intellectual or neuropsychological evaluation that will help you understand your child's learning and social emotional profile, I would be happy to schedule an appointment.
For more than 20 years, I have enjoyed helping children, adolescents and young adults overcome their difficulties while also focusing on developing their many strengths. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) that is solution focused and clinically proven to be the most effective treatment for children and adolescents who are struggling with Anxiety, Depression, and social difficulties. I have seen an enormous increase in Anxiety and over dependence on social media, vaping, and marijuana use as coping mechanisms and have developed an expertise in treating adolescents who struggle with these issues.

I welcome the opportunity to demystify concerns with learning, behavior, or adaptation in children of all ages and in young adults who may have longstanding difficulties. I use a battery of standardized tests in addition to interview and observation to help understand what underlies struggles, and what to do about it. A child may have anxiety and learning difficulties: what should you focus on first? A
teen
or young adult may have had a concussion, and problems with mood or attention which predate injury. How do we go about planning interventions which will work?

My 20 years of working with adolescents and their families has taught me to approach clients with a non-judgmental, non-authoritative attitude. This helps clients take an honest look at their lives and identify what things need to change or be accepted. Meeting a client without preconceived expectations is critical because it gives me a chance to see the client from her/his own point of view. Also, I work very hard to not act too "therapisty," which is something that often hinders therapy with
adolescent
clients in particular (e.g., "How does that make you feel?").

My focus is to help you and/or your
teen
identify and articulate what’s going on internally and devise an action plan with clear steps and strategies that will help move toward meaningful change.
There is meaning behind your behavior. The ways in which we interact with the world provide clues to what we are experiencing internally. It may be incredibly challenging to articulate precisely what is bothering you, but I'm confident we can work together to increase insight and understanding in a meaningful way. I specialize in adolescents and young adults and am happy to discuss the possibility of working together.

I am experienced in working with mood disorders, relational problems and
adolescent
adjustment issues.
I am a psychologist with 25 years of experience working with adults and adolescents. At times, people seek therapy because their needs feel urgent and immediate: They are acutely sad, are dealing with loss, or are confronted with a challenging decision. At other times, the quest for treatment reflects a subtle but persistent experience that something in a person's life is missing or imbalanced. The demands and intricacies of daily life intensify these challenges. I can help you to become clearer about who you are and what you want in the midst of them.

I think it is extremely courageous to admit we need help. I believe one of the most important criteria for successful treatment is to have a trusting, open, "therapeutic rapport" with a client. Without trust and a good connection, the therapeutic process cannot begin. With that in mind, I believe the first step is creating an environment safe from judgement and rich in support. My focus is to enable clients to acquire insight, skills, and motivation for emotional, cognitive, and behavioral transitions.I specialize in older
adolescent
and adult individual therapy as well as family and couples counseling.

Most often people come to therapy because they are experiencing some depression or anxiety related to their relationships, work, or sense of themselves. Despite this pain, making the decision to enter into therapy is often difficult. It takes great courage and a certain amount of hope. It is important to find a therapist with whom you think you will eventually be as open and honest as possible; someone who is non-judgmental, and who can both give and accept feedback. I will take the initial sessions to help us figure out if we can be good collaborators in this undertaking.

My practice with Riser+Tread centers around working with youth/male clients, and empowering them to "step up and move forward" using tools and strategies in-session and between sessions that maximize progress and momentum, while helping clients reach their full potential. Our work focuses on building confidence and social skills, reducing anxiety or depression if present, and managing ADHD.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
