This typically means understanding and changing behavior that doesn't seem to be working for you, improving existing relationships and developing new ones, conquering fears / anxiety , reducing depression and more.
My approach to treatment is interactive and engaging. I find that clients appreciate and benefit from an active therapist that will help identify areas of difficulty and work on initiating changes rather than a passive, primarily listening approach to treatment. A comfortable fit between therapist and client is an essential part of successful work together. Consistent with that, I'm happy to do a phone consultation so you can get a sense of how I approach this process. In terms of insurance, if you have out-of-network benefits we should be able to make therapy affordable.

In my experience as a therapist, I have seen many people "right" themselves during critical and painful times of their lives. People often come to therapy in distress and confusion, unsure how to manage their current life circumstances or overwhelmed by symptoms related to emotional pain. Sometimes there are signs quietly trying to get your attention and other times it comes as a crisis. Sometimes it is others in your life that are calling for you to change. We will work together to develop clarity, identify solutions and improve your overall life satisfaction.

Sometimes it takes life falling apart for us to become ready to seek a new path. You need courage to let go of what no longer works and that’s where I can help. Psychotherapy assists with these and many others-- transitions, life challenges, illness, care-taking, anxiety , and depression.
People come to psychologists to find answers, get help, and feel better. Often the true nature and deep complexity of any challenge take time to reveal themselves. As a psychologist and neuropsychologist, I help children, families, and adults with the tools of psychotherapy, neuropsychological testing, legal/forensic evaluation, and consultation. My background in human development is central to my person-centered approach. My special interests include girls and women, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, learning disabilities, neurologic conditions, employment, and life transitions.

I specialize in working with clients who may benefit from more intensive psychodynamic treatment stemming from trauma, disordered eating or addiction, family difficulties, anxiety , or depression. I work collaboratively with my patients to better understand what is impeding their ability to grow, develop, and thrive as an individual and in relationships. My goal is to facilitate a patient experience that provides a space for exploration and discovery. Through this collaborative process, we may also use our relationship as a way to better understand interpersonal dynamics and/or challenges that exist in other areas in your life.

I'm a Jungian-oriented psychoanalyst working with people seeking to navigate the complexities and challenges of their lives, in particular relationships, issues of self esteem, depression and anxiety , and major life transitions. This work is about connecting more fully with our unconscious – both that part of it which binds us to the past and that which points to the future. The goal is that, over time, we develop a robust, self-reflective form of experience which breaks through the closed circle of outdated and self-defeating narratives, embraces agency and responsibility, and leads to a life that is full, authentic, and our own.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
