Hi, I'm Greg, Have you ever felt like the path your life has taken has not turned out the way you expected? Do you sometimes wonder why you don't feel the way you think you should, or worry that you may not be headed in the right direction? We all feel that way, quite often, and I've found that it often helps to talk through some of these things to help us feel more confident in ourselves, and in our lives. For the past 30 years, I have been in the business of helping people of all ages through tough spots in their lives, with a variety of circumstances and problems, and I hope that perhaps I could help you as well.

I've worked in schools for the last twenty-three years, helping an array of children and teens experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as social, emotional, and academic challenges. I believe that young people are all amazing in their own ways. Children benefit from having someone in their corner unconditionally to help develop skills and strategies in an effort to become increasingly confident, independent, and successful both in and out of school. I value communication with parents to best help each client. I approach all of my clients in a warm and compassionate manner in an effort to develop a strong connection.

Life can leave us stuck. Anxiety, depression, unresolved trauma, or relationships that aren't working. I create a space where you can be honest about what's happening without judgment. My clients say I'm calming but direct, serious when needed but genuinely playful. I believe in speaking truth kindly while trusting you know your life best. I also supervise therapists and schools wanting to serve more deeply. After 23 years of practice, I've learned healing addresses both practical and existential. You don't need to figured it out all at once. Small steps over time. Sometimes change starts with saying "this isn't working"

We often suffer more in our attempts to avoid the many painful internal experiences of our lives rather than in facing them directly. Therapy can help you cultivate a kinder and more accepting relationship with your emotional pain so that you're able to feel it, tend to it, and move through it, instead of remaining stuck in cycles of the same problems and symptoms. Engaging in this process can uncover natural qualities of contentment, ease, and vitality. Ways of working I use to facilitate this kind of change include: AEDP, psychodynamic therapy, and practices from Buddhist psychology, among others.

I am a Harvard-trained psychologist specializing in depression, anxiety, and attachment wounds. I also have experience working with self-esteem issues, problems with self-doubt and low confidence, physical manifestations of psychological problems, conversion disorders, adjustment concerns, and religious trauma. Clients I have worked well with in the past have been interested in getting to know themselves and working to discover the factors at the root of symptoms. Therapy with me is about coming to know and accept yourself with such confidence that you can feel both less upset now and more difficult to shake in the future.

I truly enjoy supporting clients in understanding themselves and their experiences through a compassionate lens. I am honored to support identity exploration (e.g., LGBTQ+, communities of color) in ways that move clients to the life that they want. I firmly believe that it is my job as a therapist to hold client's hope for them when they cannot hope for themselves. We can sit in the discomfort together and savor the moments that feel aligned. My goal is to provide clients with skills and tools to cope with the tough moments, knowing we cannot get rid of them, to live a full life.

Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer – (William S. Burroughs). You are in command and I am only a passenger in your experience. With a pace that you will establish we will participate in talk therapy together and allow ourselves the opportunity to be self-aware. This should be a space that you understand is free of criticism and open enough to explore your life with a slight amount of help from me. Everything about you is allowed in our sessions and I mean that genuinely.

If you're in a crisis, stuck, or at a turning point you'd like to leverage, a personal counseling retreat is uniquely impactful. It compresses 6-12 months of therapy into a week. The impact is also in the inspiring environment, and sustained process, which allows a deep and more cohesive process. There's time to connect many small dots to a bigger picture. Time to learn, understand and practice new cognitive and behavioral skills. And to cultivate mindfulness and perspective, to practice stepping back to watch distress arise, and then, importantly, pass. You come away with a lived experience of inner resilience, in mind and body.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
