Through dialogue, we can collaborate to render your own mind more legible; with insight, your symptoms can be alleviated – not just managed. Together we will explore how development, identity and cultural context have impacted your well-being.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and neurotherapist. I utilize state-of-the-art, neuroscience-based technologies to help facilitate change in my clients. I work with individuals from three to over eighty years of age. Most people contact me as a result of an understandable ambivalence towards taking medications or a desire to reduce the difficulties associated with some mental or physical condition viewed by others as 'unalterable' or life-long (e.g., ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, or other medical conditions).

Hi, I’m John. I love to work with couples, and will also work with individuals looking to improve their relationships, especially with the hope (but not the requirement) their partner will join us. Does your relationship with your partner seem like a constant challenge to make it work, to see each other as you once did? I can help you understand what is going on between you, to communicate in a way that gives you each a broader perspective on your relationship so that you can learn to know what each other feels and find a way to work together as a team to make your relationship more fulfilling and less stressful.

I believe that we all exhibit the belief that life can be challenging, and navigating its twists and turns can often leave us feeling adrift in chaos and uncertainty. However, I firmly believe that within this turbulence lies a wellspring of inspiration and resilience unique to our own personal experiences. By reshaping and sharing our narratives, we can find our true path and tap into our untapped potential. My desire is to work together to cultivate resilience and strength, uncovering the best version of you.

In addition to extensive training, my work is also informed by many rewarding life experiences.
Imagine sharing your most private thoughts and feelings, safely, and without risk, so that you get to know yourself more deeply. Neuroscience teaches us how emotions affect our behavior, how they are stored in the body, and how negative emotions can be healed. In my work, I utilize techniques that focus on the relationship and the feedback mechanisms between the mind and the body in order to promote deeper and more complete healing. I also help couples and families recognize patterns of behavior that contribute to misunderstanding, tension and conflict. My intention is to create a safe space that is non-judgmental, welcoming and warm.

I am currently accepting new clients. The most significant factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. With this in mind, I adopt a warm and collaborative approach with each client. I enjoy working with a wide variety of issues, including mood disorders such as depression and anxiety; addressing relationship challenges and life transitions; supporting recovery from substance abuse; exploring issues of racial and cultural identity; and enhancing skills for management of trauma history.

I am a clinical psychologist in practice in Amherst since 1989. I work with a wide range of people, from college aged through older adults, and with a wide range of problems and issues including: negative or vulnerable self-image, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, losses, and life transitions. I strive to provide a warm, safe, collaborative, open atmosphere in which to help people find relief from suffering and enhanced vital engagement in living. I believe that pathways to growth and healing often involve increasing awareness of underlying self-defeating patterns in the ways people experience and live their lives.

I look forward to the chance to explore with you if I might offer the right fit for what you're looking for! I am also now (as of 3/18) screening for ' Men In Connection,' a Men's therapy group meeting in Northampton (see flyer).
Psychotherapy is incredibly helpful not just in managing mental health diagnoses such as Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, etc., but it is also a powerful support in navigating the ways in which we can all get stuck in undesired and unhealthy patterns in our lives and relationships. My goal is that your experience of therapy is one in which you feel deeply heard and understood, challenged in healthy ways, and safe and comfortable to explore a wide range of thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a neutral and non-judgmental setting.

Are you feeling stuck, unsure of your direction in life? Maybe grief, trauma, or relationship issues are weighing you down, making it hard to move forward. You might find yourself lying awake at night, wondering how to break free from these patterns. If this resonates, you're not alone. I understand these struggles. I don't believe you need to be "fixed" - you're not broken. Instead, I offer myself as a guide on your journey towards clarity and growth.

We all encounter times in life when we just feel stuck and overwhelmed, sometimes unsure of why we feel this way and unable to move forward. Psychotherapy helps us to achieve a sense of well-being and make changes in our lives. My hope is to create a safe and supportive therapeutic environment, which will allow you to achieve personal growth. I utilize a combination of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapies with components of mindfulness and solution-focused approaches. I work with adults of all ages and older adolescents.

I find this to be a powerful approach for addressing sleep, attention, panic, PTSD, and many other difficult symptoms.
Many folks find that even after seeing a therapist, they continue to experience problems such as difficulty sleeping, irritable bowel, hypervigilance, being easily startled, being very sensitive, and many other body-based reactions. They may be discouraged, and feel that they simply have to live with these problems. My practice specializes in working with individuals not simply to achieve symptom remission, but to achieve wellness. I actively collaborate with my patients to look at the root causes of anxiety, depression and other problems. In resolving these, I help folks find more balance and peace in their lives.

"Compassionate and down-to-earth" sums up my style. We'll start by getting a handle on your confusing feelings, thoughts, and behaviors; this usually helps people feel a little better fairly soon. Beyond that, you'll discover the story you unconsciously believe about who you are and what you're worth, and find out how it steers your life. Then, we build up the story you prefer, and you begin acting on it.

I believe many issues that we face are related to our struggles to avoid, ignore, or otherwise gloss over painful aspects of how we define ourselves.
I believe that compassion, flexibility, and the willingness to listen carefully are the foundations of a good therapeutic relationship. I will work with you to create a safe and caring space where we can explore what you would like to change and develop a path towards realizing that change. To do this, I will draw from multiple theories and techniques to provide the individualized structure that will allow you to move towards your goals. In general, I view my job to be finding ways to help you realize your own strengths and discover your own solutions.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
