Over the past 23+ years, it has been my honor and privilege to work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families from different cultural backgrounds. I have experience working with clients and families who have had challenges with difficult life events to people struggling with major mental illness. My goal as a therapist is to explore what brings you, your partner, and/or child into therapy and together formulate different approaches that utilize your strengths to develop skills to best help you address your specific needs.

I strive to create a therapeutic environment where all individuals have the chance to feel seen, heard, and comfortable and understand there are many aspects that contribute to an individual's thought process, actions, perception, and internalized sense of self and the world around them. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to working through and treating the once in a lifetime event that is each individual. I have worked at residential and partial behavioral health programs for adolescents and in generalized adult outpatient mental health services.

There are many reasons why someone might seek counseling. The reasons will be as individual as you are and they aren't necessarily always negative. You may be experiencing developmentally appropriate rites of passage, expected or unexpected changes or all of the above. Individual therapy provides you the opportunity to work one-on-one with a licensed therapist to identify aspects of your life that you hope to better understand or change. We do this by learning about your lived experiences and setting goals toward your desired results.

My approach is conversational, flexible, and collaborative. When we meet, I strive to offer compassion, support, and humor to help you best meet your goals. I am flexible in my approach, as there is no one “right way” to help you move toward your goals. Together we will find an approach that is most reflective of who you are and speaks to your strengths. Throughout this process, we will remain curious about your experience and integrate an understanding of your past and present that can inform your future. This process can be challenging, as well as exciting and empowering.

My approach to psychotherapy is based on attachment theory which states that our first important relationships (namely, with our parents) influence how we relate to those closest to us now. As infants, we learn to do whatever is necessary, including distorting our thoughts and feelings, in order to maintain that connection. This early experience even affects brain development setting the stage for depression, anxiety and dysregulation. Fortunately, current relationships (including with a therapist) can provide a corrective experience. That is the beauty of psychotherapy - by understanding how our past affects our present we are better able to negotiate our future.

MY PRACTICE IS CURRENTLY CLOSED TO NEW CLIENTS. For over 30 years, I have had the privilege of working with and learning from hundreds of individuals, couples and families as they have wrestled with the personal and professional challenges of their lives. I believe that my clients find me to be very down to earth and human so it is easier for them to open up and be real with me. Every person's story and circumstances are unique but if someone is helped by the work we do together, it is generally because we form a relationship of trust and connection.

Emotionally Focused Therapists
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an approach to therapy that helps clients identify their emotions, learn to explore and experience them, to understand them and then to manage them. Emotionally Focused Therapy embraces the idea that emotions can be changed, first by arriving at or 'living' the maladaptive emotion (e.g. loss, fear or shame) in session, and then learning to transform it. Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples seeks to break the negative emotion cycles within relationships, emphasizing the importance of the attachment bond between couples, and how nurturing of the attachment bonds and an empathetic understanding of each others emotions can break the cycles.
