I have been a therapist for many years. Therapy, I feel, begins with a relationship, and before someone leaves my office for the first time, I would like them to feel that they are understood and cared for. Very often, people feel overwhelmed in their marriage, , their other relationships, or their life at work. I try to tune in to their current discomfort quickly and give them the idea that we can work together to improve their life.

Not accepting new clients
As a psychologist, I’ve worked with clients for over 30 years and have training in many of the evidence-based practices.
Are you worrying or feeling depressed?  Do the things that you used to enjoy just not grab you?  Do you feel stuck? Are you struggling with alcohol or other substances? Therapy can help you get back to your best self...but you want to talk to someone who gets it, who gets you, and who knows what they’re doing. Someone who cares about you and has the skills to help you feel good again.

I'm familiar with a range of psychotherapeutic models, but I’m particularly drawn to the hu manistic, existential, and narrative schools of thought while incorporating a faith-based dynamic throughout regardless of the particular technique that I’m incorporating in the moment.
My graduate studies were in marriage and family therapy and this has become a specialty area for me. I work very well with couples and with individuals whose emotional suffering seems to be stemming from relationship conflict. I also work with people struggling with depression, loss, anxiety, and trauma related pain. My approach has been heavily affected by my undergraduate work as well. I have a bachelor's degree in philosophy and religious studies.

I have many areas of expertise and ways of working- tears and laughter included.
I have been a hu man being for 64 years, a practicing psychotherapist for 22. I invite you to stand shoulder to shoulder with me in our journey to ease your suffering and achieve your goals. Therapy offers many possibilities- seeing old problems in a new and open way, being more alive in the world, celebrating the possibility of wonder, or learning more effective strategies for relating. This means exploring and addressing various kinds of dilemmas and pain. It may simply mean support with your creative process, or more commonly, with the feeling that you are “stuck”.

I have worked for almost 40 years with married and unmarried couples who face challenges with intimacy, communication, power, trust, physical connection, collaboration, parenting, and life changes. Many of my clients face some current or unresolved past challenges that have robbed some of the joy, comfort, and closeness in the relationship. My clients often want to create or re-ignite satisfying interactions and greater closeness. Working through these challenges and re-building energetic, and loving connection within a very safe and non-judgmental environment is what I love to do.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
