How do you decide it's time to seek help through psychotherapy? For many people, the decision is clear; a significant event occurs or disruptive symptoms arise. For others, the decision is less obvious-maybe you haven't been feeling like yourself lately, you worry more than others or just sense that things could be better. As a client-centered therapist, I work with clients on their goals and to join them on their journey to wellness. I offer clinical expertise to provide guidance, new perspectives, and to raise awareness of underlying issues that may be behind current problems.

For me, psychotherapy must address the needs of the person. Sometimes this can mean exploring how you got to the point you are at, and how you want to change; and sometimes you may want specific tools to address a very specific issue. Finding the right therapist is perhaps one of the most important choices you will make and also one of the most difficult. Although a therapist may have an armory of techniques to use, what I have found to be at the heart of any type of psychotherapy is whether the relationship works between you and your therapist.

My approach to working with individuals and families is varied, depending on the specific needs and goals of each client. With a focus on client-centered and strength-based therapeutic models, I have found it most beneficial and effective to incorporate a variety of modalities such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Play Therapy, Art Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Supportive Therapy based on the needs of the individual or family I am working with. Recognizing where my clients are in their growth and development is a key factor in the approach taken when working with them.

You smile and say “I’m fine” but it's not true. You don’t necessarily know what’s wrong so sometimes you even convince yourself you're OK. You feel overwhelmed trying to balance your responsibilities and meet the expectations of everyone around you. You feel depressed and anxious. You’ve learned to cope by scrolling on your phone and self-medicating. You want to learn healthier coping skills. You want to talk to someone who only has YOU in mind. You hear people talk about going to therapy and you think it‘s a good idea but you don’t know where to start. Seeking help, whether for yourself or your teen, can be an exhausting task.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
