Therapy can be a helpful way to address challenges in life. My approach to therapy is warm and collaborative. We’ll work together to figure out a process that makes sense for you. My priority is to make sure you feel heard, understood, and accepted. I have a particular interest in working with queer, transgender, and nonbinary children and adults. I’m also invested in working with immigrants, third culture kids, and those exploring questions of cultural identity. I primarily use a psychodynamic approach, however I draw on a variety of modalities depending on a client's needs.

NOT taking NEW Clients. NO OpENINGS. My services are SELF-PAY/out-of-network. I specialize in gender identity, sexuality, sexual orientation, and spirituality concerns. I most often see people struggling with identity, negative effects of masculinity norms, emotional distance, and social anxiety working to understand and communicate their needs to create intimacy, connection, and a sense of calm in their lives. People who work with me report they improve their relationships, are calmer and better able to manage their worries, identify and communicate their needs to others without shame, and are more satisfied with their lives.

I work with adults with diverse backgrounds and identities who have experienced trauma, loss, difficulties in relationships, or difficulties with self-esteem, anxiety, and stress. I see therapy as an opportunity to enhance joy, spontaneity, meaning, and connection to yourself and others. It’s ideally an inviting, open, and safe place to explore your sense of your identity, and to learn about yourself in the context of a relationship.

Effective psychotherapy is a collaborative process and begins with a motivated client and a well-trained clinician. Whether you're dealing with a challenging relationship, a frustrating career, or symptoms of anxiety or depression, therapy can be a highly effective resource. In the first couple of sessions, I conduct an evaluation to familiarize myself with your presenting issues and history. We then take steps to hone skills you already have and to develop new strategies to help you navigate your life more successfully. Depending on your needs and preferences, we can work in a short-term model or on an open-ended basis.

As the global pandemic has shown us, sometimes life becomes overwhelming and uncontrollable. During these times it may be best to talk with someone outside of your community of family, friends or co-workers. A warm hearted professional to lend a moment of support and guidance. I share with clients in deciding how best to approach the issues, with the intent of addressing both the current distressing symptoms and long-standing patterns of behavior that are getting in the way of a thriving life. My practice is telehealth-based, and I accept direct pay (some prefer for privacy) as well as most PPO plans as an Out of Network provider.

How do I effectuate change? I believe change occurs from a sustained active approach with the therapist. Why is there a need for change? Many people report affective states of anxiety, depression, and stress that are inhibiting them in their work, personal lives, and enjoyment of life. My education and experience put me in a unique position to give people the understanding to find satisfaction from their personal, family and work life. Therapeutic interactions are in the here and now. Understanding often leads to an improved quality of life; alleviating anxiety, depressive feelings as well as fears of being stuck.

Complicated as they are, relationships are the backbone of healing and the foundation from which we all can thrive. How we relate to ourselves and to others is paramount in shaping our worldview and our ability to live happier, healthier lives. It starts with an introduction; where we go from there - well, the possibilities are boundless.

You want to feel better and do better in your life, and now, perhaps more than ever, you need someone – someone REALLY helpful – “in your corner” to help you turn things around. I’m willing and able to do just that. Together, we can do this: I use a range of solution-focused approaches: treatments that work (CBT, DBT, and whatever else works). We’ll figure out exactly how you’ve “gotten here,” plan a way out, and I’ll guide you along the way…as we activate your strengths and your inner resources to live a better life. I work with adults, teens, and families and I’m available immediately to give you the help you need and deserve.

I will guide you towards FEELING better and DOING better in your life–especially in your relationships! My belief and my experience shows me that we have within us deep wells of strengths, and the capacity to heal and move forward in our lives. But it sure helps to have someone in your corner: Together, we will understand your patterns (your internal patterns, and the patterns in your relationships). With my support, with new insights, and perhaps some new skills, you'll be read to make some positive changes: ...real progress, that lasts!

*PRACTICE CURRENTLY FULL* I am an experienced, licensed psychologist in private practice, and on faculty at Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. I work with adults and older adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, and relationship problems. I never underestimate the complexities of the mind, personality, and the unconscious dynamics inherent in relationships. At the same time, I feel psychotherapy should be practical. I have a thoughtful, compassionate style in addressing the roots of repetitive distress, while keeping in mind that such work must also ameliorate more immediate distress.

How can I get over feelings of sadness, loss, or low self-esteem? Why do I often feel stuck, without any energy or desire? Is it possible for me to change long-standing patterns that have caused problems over many years? My focus in therapy is to help clients confront such questions, in order for them to gain insight and break repetitive patterns of suffering. As they gradually free themselves to explore and share, they begin to find new ways to deepen relationships, engage in more meaningful and productive work, transition to a new stage in life, or come to a new appreciation of themselves.

The poet David Whyte writes, "Let my history then be a gate unfastened to a new life and not a barrier to my becoming. Let me find the ghosts and histories and barely imagined future of this world, and let me now have the innocence to grow just as well in shadow or light." Coming to therapy can help release you from the confining narratives of your history and help you discover a future you might not have previously imagined. I will work with you to hear from your pain and how that pain might be speaking to you.

How can I find a therapist in Cambridge?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
