For Couples seeking to improve their family and other close relationships suffering from anger management issues, medical circumstances, PTSD, career, or money difficulties, I personalize my approach using a range of models drawing from Cognitive-Behavioral, Internal Family Systems and The Gottman Method, using seven principles for making a
marriage
work.
Therapy should be tailored to address the specific needs of each client. Having trained in a variety of practices and methods, I work together with my clients, to determine which approach works best for them to address their ADHD, anxiety, depression or relationship challenges. I work with adults & couples of all ages, including college-aged and older adults. I specialize in treating mood and anxiety disorders, major life transitions (e.g., career, college), relational /familial concerns and trauma /PTSD. I also have specialized training in working with Couples, and individuals struggling with anger management issues.

I address matters such as
marriage
and relationships, depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual abuse, grief, as well as spirituality and co-dependency.
William Arthur Ward once said, "We can choose to throw stones, to stumble on them, to climb over them, or to build with them." The passion I carry for the therapeutic process is not only founded on my training and education but also my personal experience. I have faith in one's capacity for growth that comes from the willingness to be honest and courage to face difficult issues. In this life we will encounter many stones in our path. It is up to each individual to choose what they will do with them.

I understand the importance of developing resilience-to-change in order to effectively cope with major life transitions including losses and endings (divorce, retirement, serious medical illness) as well as beginnings (new relationships,
marriage
, birth of a child, starting a career). Without such resilience, life can feel overwhelming, self esteem becomes precarious, and mood can dip dramatically. As a licensed clinical psychologist, with more than 30 years experience, my clients value my warm, collaborative approach to relationship issues, executive stress, mid-life issues, inter-generational conflicts, and self-defeating behaviors that keep people stuck.

I have experience working with people overcoming depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties and life transitions such as becoming a parent and entering into
marriage
.
Entering therapy is courageous. It can be a transformational space, a bridge from suffering to the discovery of choices that enable people to actively engage life. Depression, anxiety, fear and difficult feelings are not indicative of sickness, but rather signals that call for self-care, curiosity and empathy. I believe people's strengths are integral in the therapeutic process; I seek to help people access their humor, resilience, courage, intelligence, sensitivity and honesty throughout the healing process.

Factor dealing with emotional challenges such as depression, anxiety, PTSD,
marital
/relationship stress, racial trauma, then it may feel like the world is more unbearable.
At M.A.Jean-Charles Psychotherapy & Consulting, LLC, healing, learning, and growing is our mantra and shapes our therapeutic philosophy. We believe that to heal psychically and to grow into the best version of ourselves, and one must engage in learning. At times, life creates too much noise; one can lose sight and footing on their place in this world. Learning provides a pathway to engage in healing from that which binds the spirit. As a result of this, one is capable of tremendous emotional growth and, ultimately, living a fulfilling life. My speciality population is Women of Color.

For over 18 yrs, I have assisted clients struggling with individual and interpersonal issues arising from couple/
marital
distress, self-confidence, perfectionism, body image, women’s and men’s issues, cultural differences, and difficulties in the workplace, especially in higher ed (academics, staff, and students), and highly competitive/demanding workplaces.
As a systemically trained and culturally attuned couples and family therapist, I recognize the impact of our relationships—with our loved ones, with ourselves, and with our broader context— in leading a meaningful life. I will help you identify and change painful patterns that hold you back. And because I believe that therapy is most successful when approached as a collaboration between client and therapist, together we will attend to your relational, self and cultural contexts in order to co-construct wished-for outcomes, find desired meanings and develop expanded perspectives to pressing issues in your life.

It's gratifying when couples receive help for pre-
marital
counseling and to decide whether to separate.
I enjoy working creatively with clients. Whether you suffer from anxiety, problems with a loved one or you can't make a decision, I have experience in problem-solving using your strengths. I work with families, teens, and adults who are stressed and totally 'stuck.' I've lived and raised my children in Cambridge, MA and Cuba, and love the diversity of working with inter-racial and trans-national families. I also worked in Tchad. I work with college-bound adults who are balancing social needs with a heavy workload. Is therapy work? Definitely. Is there support available? Yes. In Spanish we say- vale la peña -it is worth it.

As a psychologist, I feel honored when clients share the pain and suffering of their life, as well as the relief and joy that often follow successful therapy. I work best with people who are open to change and transformation and with those who are willing to consider their resistance to change. We encounter changes in our lives, or in the realities with which we need to cope, and those experiences challenge us to transform ourselves and our approach to things. Transformation often involves addressing the fear, denial, avoidance, and other obstacles that prevent us from becoming increasingly whole.

How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
