I specialize in helping clients with relationship issues, identity questions, existential angst, grief, obsessive and compulsive issues, anxiety, and life transitions.
It can be rather disheartening to expend considerable energy trying to change something and be left with a similar outcome. It is not easy to lead a fulfilling life while being caught in patterns outside of awareness. Psychotherapy gives the opportunity to look inward and ask how a fleeting thought, a dream, or a subtle change may be related to ongoing difficulties. Taking a closer look at something while also being curious during that exploration can open up a greater understanding and lead to meaningful changes.

*PRACTICE CURRENTLY FULL* I am an experienced, licensed psychologist in private practice, and on faculty at Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. I work with adults and older adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, and relationship problems. I never underestimate the complexities of the mind, personality, and the unconscious dynamics inherent in relationships. At the same time, I feel psychotherapy should be practical. I have a thoughtful, compassionate style in addressing the roots of repetitive distress, while keeping in mind that such work must also ameliorate more immediate distress.

I have been a practicing psychologist, psychoanalyst, and teacher for many years, and I offer psychotherapy tailored to address the unique needs and goals of my individual clients. Many want to work on specific problems relating to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, or childhood trauma. Many are successful people, but find they struggle with one specific area, for example intimate relationships. Some are not sure what, exactly, is wrong, but know that they feel stuck in their lives and are looking for help identifying a path forward.

What is a life worth living for you? This is ultimately the question we will journey into. Our work might explore your ways of relating to the given "problem", reframe particular internalized narratives, educate you on neurobiological frameworks, and/or encourage you to draw upon your own unique heritage, hopes, and motivations toward your behavioral change and your preferred life. I hope to remind each person of the maxim of narrative therapy: "the problem is the problem; the person is not the problem" (White, 1998). So, what story would you like to write through your actions, values, and life?

What stands between you and your Happiness? I welcome you as we develop trust and explore what is getting in the way of you experiencing a more satisfying life. I have been privileged to work with children, teens, and adults with a wide variety of family histories. Often our childhood experiences play a big part in how we develop as adults. Post COVID 19, some have a new set of fears and real issues regarding work, health, and relationships. I have specialized and trained with ADD, Depression, Trauma, and, Anxiety, and there are many tools (Mindfulness, CBT, Compassionate Inquiry) that we can explore to see which is most supportive.

Seeking therapy is a sign of personal strength. Often people who engage in therapy are actually doing well in life, but would like to do better in one area or another. It takes awareness in our lives and courage to be able to reach out for help. I strive to put people at ease in building the therapeutic relationship. I also greatly value individual differences and approach each client with an open-minded and non-judgmental stance. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of a successful experience in therapy.

Feelings associated with anxiety, depression, trauma, & life transitions are a part of the human experience. I strive to help guide one through managing these feelings by turning down the volume so that one can live a fuller life. Welcome. People seek psychotherapy for a variety of reasons, such as relief from anxiety, loneliness, or grief. Others feel stuck or disconnected. Perhaps patterns of unsatisfying relationships or difficulties deepening relationships have emerged. Psychotherapy provides a unique opportunity to explore personal issues in an environment of trust and respect. I appreciate the courage it takes to work through problems. Emotional pain can signal that one is called upon to make changes or understand things in a new light. I am interested in helping others express themselves more openly, feel more connected to others, and enhance capacities for making authentic choices.

Diving into the world of parenting can feel like stepping into the great unknown and I aim to support you as you navigate the challenges and questions that are so often a part of the parenthood journey—questions like, “Am I doing this right?” or “Will I ever feel like myself again?" Whether you are a new parent, expecting a child, or struggling to conceive, we will work together to process all the emotions that accompany these significant transitions. Though this chapter of your life may feel overwhelming or isolating, you don't have to go through it alone. This moment does not define forever.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
