I offer 4-6 session CBT programs to fight anxiety around body image, relationships, trauma, social situations, self-esteem, work/school issues, chronic health issues, chronic depression, and trauma (sexual and physical abuse, accidents, natural disasters, wars). Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that treats problems and boosts happiness by modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and thoughts. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which probes patterns and root causes of conflict, CBT focuses on solutions, encouraging patients to challenge distorted cognitions and change destructive patterns of behavior.

Welcome! It's wonderful that you are considering therapy, and I am here to help. I believe we are capable of far more than we realize. I think of myself as a guide to self-discovery and self-realization. Through couples and individual therapy I have successfully helped people significantly improve their relationships, decrease conflict, depression, anxiety, and self-destructive patterns such as alcoholism and eating disorders. Working together I have also helped people enhance their self-esteem, communication, boundaries, and helped people work through loss, trauma, school and career difficulties.

As a person-centered, relationship-based therapist I believe that we are all on a journey towards being our best selves. However, there are times on that journey when we need a little support. Therapy is a time for self-exploration, reflection and care. My approach is strengths-based and solution-focused, utilizing the philosophies and tools of the major psychological approaches.

Are you experiencing attention or memory issues, brain fog, or other cognitive-based difficulties? Are these impacting your relationships, job/career success, or self-esteem? I conduct neuropsychological evaluations through comprehensive testing, after which I provide tailored recommendations based on your own relative strengths and areas of needed improvement. I also regularly see people who are recovering from brain injury (TBI/concussions, head trauma, new-onset neurological diagnoses), who might be struggling with cognitive, emotional, and/or psychological recovery.

I see psychotherapy as an exploration of the self, as guided introspection, where the itinerary is determined by the unique circumstances of each person's history. It's about raising expectations, and there is both hope and risk in deciding to accept the consequences of wanting something more. Most of us begin therapy unaware of the peculiarities of our personal histories. The often harsh patterns of interaction that have been carried through generations, are home, they seem normal, and thus, are often invisible. Yet they have stealthily shaped our personality from birth.

In our work together my clients heal from within. Why? Because with deep core work, based upon epigenetics and other modalities, all the regular things in life will automatically fall into place. You will experience breakthrough counseling with tools for life, attaining deep self love, developinging new ways of thinking and feeling, being in charge of your brain, fearlessly listening within, learning helpful communication, and understanding choices from a new perspective. For couples, we do the same core work. All but one couple found renewed love. My work is my passion, and why I stay informed on working approaches.

The therapy session is a time and space one sets aside to focus on self. To be with self. And to build one’s self. It can be challenging to reflect on patterns, thoughts and emotions, relationships, past events and/or change, but it can also be transformative and rewarding. My role as your therapist is to witness your process and to reflect back with you along the way. The therapeutic relationship is an essential piece of my practice and is built on honesty, trust, empathy, and compassion.

I’ve been part of the Harvard Medical School system for the past 8 years, either as trainee or faculty. I'm trained primarily in psychodynamic therapy, but principles/interventions from other paradigms also inform my work. Ultimately, the nature of therapy depends on the patient and their goals. For this reason, the course of therapy is hard to describe, but it seems only to work amidst empathy, respect, and compassion, not to mention humor (sometimes life can only be laughed at). This is a perspective I lay out in some detail in a new two-volume book, published by Routledge, titled, "A Humane Vision of Clinical Psychology."

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
