My counseling work is focused on adolescents and young adults. I feel it is invaluable for young people to have an advocate and sounding board while navigating these years of great change and evolution. I look forward to getting to know you and exploring how we can work together toward healing and growth. With young adults, I believe that the client is the expert of their lived experience. I
partner
with my client to explore a variety of issues that may be holding them back from wellbeing and peace. This may include difficult beliefs, patterns and behaviors that they want to change,
relationship
issues, career changes, and anxiety.

I believe that the
relationship
is key in therapy. I am known by my clients and colleagues as warm, humorous, caring and compassionate while still being direct and challenging, when it's helpful. I use an eclectic approach to therapy that integrates relational, humanistic, and psychodynamic theories while utilizing some mindfulness, meditation, and psychoeducation. I aim to always provide a safe, nonjudgemental environment with the hope of making it easier for us to explore difficulties, navigate emotional disturbances, and identify patterns from the past to the present.

My areas of specialization include anxiety, depression,
relationship
difficulties, trauma, and working with individuals in the LGBQ/T communities.
I believe every person has inner wisdom and the capacity for fulfillment in life. However, challenging events in the far or recent past can make this wisdom hard to access, or, at times, even imagine. Instead, you may experience anxiety, depression,
relationship
difficulties, or feelings of chronic stress. Using a collaborative, integrative approach I help you connect with your strengths, develop practical coping skills, and gain deep self-understanding and acceptance. In this way you can free yourself from self-limiting patterns and become more of who you want to be in your life.

My clinical work is based on a rich understanding of different dynamics affecting young people and
couples
, including victimization through discriminatory stress, microaggressions, violence, bi-cultural, bi-racial identity development conflicts and
couples
from different cultural and sexual identity backgrounds.
Do you need a change? Trying to get back on track or go beyond where you have been? I am a cross-cultural and bilingual (Spanish-English) therapist who strives to provide specific skills to unique backgrounds and situations. Do you feel misunderstood, devalued or excluded? Do you have enough emotional supports? Are you culturally different, dealing with more than one culture or ethnicity? Do you want to enhance your performance and learn to be more effective in a cross-cultural environment? My aim is to create a welcoming and non-judgmental environment to explore and actively pursue your emotional, personal, and professional growth.

I bring a warm and interactive style to my psychotherapeutic practice, which can best be described as "eclectic," as I believe that not one type of therapy is right for everyone. Pulling from psychodynamic (insight-oriented) psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness/meditation, and somatics (the integration of body/mind/spirit), I will tailor my practice to your individual needs depending on the particular issues you would like to address in therapy.

My areas of expertise include working with survivors of traumatic experiences,
relationship
/interpersonal difficulties, anxiety/depression, and working with LGBTQIA-identified individuals.
I am not currently accepting new clients. I believe that therapy should be a non-judgmental and safe place to explore, discover, heal, and find relief. Finding a good therapy match is crucial to bringing about the change that you desire in your life. Working with someone who helps you to feel seen, understood, and challenged in a non-threatening way can create the safety to explore the unknown and help you grow into your full potential.

Effective therapy creates meaningful, lasting, joyful change. As your therapist I can help you resolve the inner and outer conflicts that create pain and exhaustion. Life brings unchosen experiences. Sometimes we feel hurt, scared, or deeply alone. Sometimes what happens seems too big to manage. For 25+ years I have had the privilege of helping people learn to live as their "best self," able to manage their moods, thoughts and situations with compassion and skill, to make changes to reach their goals, and to find happiness. I have also had the honor of helping
couples
and families move from hurtful interactions to healthy loving relationships.

Together, we will work to identify your inner strengths and resources that will aid you in self-discovery and growth. I utilize mindfulness and motivational interviewing approaches to further a client's journey towards positive change. My therapeutic approach is rooted in a relational framework and the belief that all healing takes place in the context of relationships. I focus on creating a trusting client-therapist
relationship
by providing a safe, supportive and encouraging space to help facilitate self-discovery and enduring change.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
