Since Adoption is my primary focus, I work with all people in the adoption triad, meaning original parents, adoptive parents, and adopted children, teens and adults.
I work with people who want to improve themselves, their relationships and their self image. These are people seeking a sounding board, a safe confidential place to talk, and extensive knowledge and experience dealing with their issues. My work focuses on where the client is now, and where they want to go, with no pre-conceived notions. We look at past experiences together and how they impact the present. For parents, I offer coaching and suggestions for managing challenging behaviors, and understanding the impact of early childhood trauma of behavior. With younger children, I encourage learning about expression of feelings.

I have helped people to build more satisfying relationships, to achieve more success in their careers, and to address parenting issues particularly those associated with adoption .
Do you not have enough satisfaction in your life? Do you wish you were in a relationship? Are you struggling with the one you are in? Do you wish for a better career? Talking in a therapeutic environment helps people take more control of their lives, allowing them to experience a quality of life that was otherwise impossible. It is rewarding to see this type of change take place with my clients.

I have worked in various settings including schools, hospitals, residential care, adoption services & community centers providing support and fostering personal growth.
We all face challenges and could use extra support at times. I offer a safe non-judgmental place, where you can let go of your daily stress and focus on your needs through creative expression. Art therapy integrates psychotherapy (talk therapy) with the creative process to improve and enhance mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages. No prior artistic experience is needed to benefit from the healing power of expressive art. Art is a universal language of the mind that speaks through images & symbols and allows verbal and beyond-words communication.

My personal interests focus on anxiety, depression, trauma (interpersonal & generational), stress management, somatic complaints, relationship struggles, and adoption .
Have you found peace yet? “The only way out is in.” Psychotherapy has always been for those who are ready to experience healing. Along with alleviating "symptoms", my approach is most effective for individuals who are seeking a deeper understanding of underlying causes and who strive for personal growth. Together, we explore the root of current feelings that led things astray. We can analyze more in-depth of emotional suffering, gain insight into self-awareness, build resilience, and develop better coping mechanisms and secure attachment. Doing so empowers us to reach emotional maturity and enable more fulfilling relationships.

I respect why people seek therapy. Work begins with the truth of their stated problem. People describe undesirable patterns in career/work and relationships. I help people connect current problems to deficits or traumas in early life, or situations that interrupted their own early development. I help people discover, talk about, and grieve these early situations. The therapeutic action is the exploration of the link between early situations and the current problem. I help people create new experiences of themselves in work, everyday stressful situations, and in love relationships. The outcome: freedom to create a satisfying life and future.

A decision to consider psychotherapy suggests you are experiencing difficulties in life which you hope a professional can help with. Perhaps you have noticed some repeating patterns that get in the way of love or work but do not understand why. I am a trained psychoanalyst who has had a psychotherapy practice for over thirty years. I work with individual adults and have additional training in couples therapy. My style is responsive and interactive. I ascribe to the value of firm therapist-patient boundaries. This practice helps to facilitate a safe space which is essential if the work is to proceed.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
