Substance Use Therapists in Boston, MA
I am a psychotherapist with more than 20 years of clinical, teaching and research experience. I work with individuals experiencing an array of circumstances and challenges. One of my specialties is counseling people with a focus on those in high-risk professions (e.g., law enforcement, fire/rescue, EMS, military) and their loved ones. I also work with a broad range of individuals employed in other “helping professions” (e.g., medical and mental healthcare providers, veterinary medicine professionals, educators, prosecutors, clergy) whose careers may have been negatively impacted by job and/or personal circumstances.

I help clients break cycles of anxiety, substance use, and body image struggles by understanding the root cause and building practical, sustainable coping tools.
You’ve spent so long trying to meet every expectation—your own and everyone else’s—that the pressure has become overwhelming. The anxiety, overthinking, and constant self-judgment keep pulling you back into patterns you’re exhausted by. Some days you try to manage it with structure or control; other days you turn to substances or familiar coping habits just to quiet your mind for a moment. You wake up determined to do better, yet by evening the guilt, frustration, or heaviness returns. You’re tired of feeling like you “should” be able to handle this on your own, and you’re ready for something to shift.

You’re capable. Thoughtful. Successful by most standards. And you’re carrying more than most people realize.
I work with high-intellect adults navigating anxiety, trauma, burnout, and relational patterns that no longer serve them. Many of my clients are professionals in demanding fields - healthcare, academia, tech, and finance who are used to managing complexity but rarely have space to slow down and process their own inner world.
For some, that pressure shows up as over-functioning. For others, it looks like a glass (or three) of wine at the end of the day becoming the only reliable way to turn the volume down.

Specialized evidence-based treatment can generate a shift and help you feel more centered in yourself, less likely to be taken over by emotions, and more quickly recover from intense feelings. Your relationship with yourself, and with others, will improve. You will gain a stronger sense of purpose, increased ability to communicate, more often avoid misunderstandings, and will resolve conflicts with others more easily.

You might be doing your best to keep things together, but inside you feel overwhelmed or unlike yourself. I often work with women who are adjusting to new motherhood, coping with postpartum anxiety or depression, or trying to make sense of a difficult birth experience. Others come to me carrying old trauma or grief that still affects their daily lives. You may feel tired, anxious, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward. You just want to feel steady and like yourself again.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
