Therapy is the gift of time set aside each week to pause, acknowledge how you’re feeling, and connect with yourself in a deeper way. In a time of unprecedented levels of fear, loss, and loneliness, it’s more important than ever to develop meaningful ways to be present with our emotions and learn new ways to soothe and nurture ourselves in the midst of painful feelings. I specialize in relational psychotherapy, a type of therapy that focuses on the quality of your relationships, both with yourself and with others. I also draw on psychodynamic, family systems, trauma-informed, attachment, social justice and anti-oppressive theories.

I have worked with children, adolescents, & adults in individual, group, & family therapy settings, providing support and diagnostic clarification in areas such as anxiety, depression, & LGBTQ issues.
While I believe every person is the ultimate expert in themselves, I think therapy provides a powerful opportunity for partnership and guidance. In a safe, nonjudgmental space, people are able to explore new elements of their lives and selves, to identify goals and values, and to examine the ways current patterns are either supporting or hindering those goals. My job as a therapist is to help create that safe space with you, to encourage you along your process of exploration, and to provide reflection and guidance where it may be helpful.

My areas of counseling interests include anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, panic, phobias and social), issues related to self-esteem, stress-management and the impact family and relationships have on psychological health.
I recognize and have a deep respect for the positive impact counseling can have on one's life. Having an impartial third party provide support and help one cope with any number of life's challenges can be invaluable. I believe the best therapists listen without judging and never dismiss or minimize rational or irrational fears as issues that adults "shouldn't" worry about. I practice an eclectic mix of theoretical approaches to empathically help individuals develop personal strengths and improve their self-awareness. My approach to therapy is collaborative, supportive, practical, and focuses on personal effectiveness.

I enjoy helping family members discuss and figure out how to accept and be an ally to their trans child, no matter how old the child (toddler to adult).
Hello! My specialty area is consulting with parents & families with transgender, non-binary, or gender questioning youth. I founded and directed Harbor Camps for transgender youth and was the CEO for 13 years. I have worked with thousands of trans & non-binary youth and their families, and I am now doing consulting with parents to help move them on their journey toward understanding and acceptance. I work with the entire family together or just parents at their own pace and take time to understand their family and meet them where they are. I provide both short-term and long-term consulting.

Depression, anxiety, trouble concentrating, behavioral problems, insomnia, interpersonal conflict, low self-esteem, and flashbacks are just a few symptoms that can be caused by underlying trauma. Most of us have dealt with trauma in our lives. A traumatic event could be one isolated incident, such as a car accident or death in the family . Some individuals have experienced pervasive trauma, such as an ongoing medical procedure or family discord. At Robinson Counseling and Wellness, LLC we have clinicians who been trained to effectively resolve the symptoms of trauma and provide a safe environment for healing.

I am influenced by attachment theory and family systems theory as well as a history of working with trauma.
Currently not accepting clients: please email if you'd like to be put on a waitlist. I believe that problems develop relationally and therefore it makes sense to solve them relationally: to seek resolution through genuine understanding is the work of therapy. In my experience, the relief that clients seek is contingent upon being seen as they are, and as they want to be seen, and feeling understood.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
