I treat adults for mood,
anxiety
, adjustment, identify development, and chronic stress.
As we go through life, we can find ourselves feeling “stuck” in patterns or situations that limit satisfaction and create barriers to achieving our goals. Sometimes these patterns develop slowly over time and sometimes circumstances shift rapidly – leaving us overwhelmed and unsure of where to go next. I believe the role of psychotherapy is to create an open and affirming space to explore patterns with compassion and curiosity, clarify values, and make progress towards living an authentic and fulfilling life.

I work with adults needing support with
anxiety
, depression, parenting/life stressors, career ambivalence, relationship issues, self-esteem, cultural factors, and transition. Is navigating through a life transition or relationship issue bringing up stress,
anxiety
, insecurities, or impacting your motivation? Is a new obstacle making parenting a challenge? Are cultural expectations affecting your daily functioning, career goals, or desires? By understanding how these triggers can impact symptoms, we can break negative cycles and empower positive change.

I am EMDR certified and have used this evidence-based approach to help with a variety of issues including trauma,
anxiety
, depression, OCD and others.
I see therapy as a collaborative process in which I listen to how you want to move forward with your goals. I always take time to really hear how you, as an individual or couple, want to make changes and respect your own choices in your life. We sometimes find ourselves repeating negative patterns or stuck in challenging situations but have difficulty knowing how to make lasting changes. Therapy can help make this clearer.

My ideal client is someone who comes to therapy in a time of need. They might be experiencing
anxiety
due to life changes and transitions or they might be experiencing symptoms of
anxiety
for the first time and be concerne as to where the
anxiety
came from. The client might be processing loss or grief from a loved one or past friendships and or relationships. My ideal client will have needs such as needing to identify coping skills to get through life stressors, assistance with reaching goals. As a therapist I would be able to provide the client with a objective perspective to bounce their ideas and situations off of.

I have vast experience helping clients learn to manage their symptoms of
anxiety
, depression and disordered eating as well navigating relationship issues and life transitions.
My clients range from young adults to people in middle age. Most of my clients seek therapy when they become overwhelmed by a personal life challenge. Many aspects of their lives may be going smoothly, but they struggle in other areas: could be the academic rigors of college, a complicated relationship with a romantic partner, how to handle work stress or parenting issues. Whatever the reason, my clients hope for a therapist who creates a safe space for them to talk openly about their struggle, someone to help them gain new perspective and to partner with them to help alleviate the emotional pain caused by their difficulty.

I have extensive experience dealing with issues of relationship conflict, depression,
anxiety
, addiction, trauma, grief & loss, and spirituality.
I am licensed to practice in MA, NY, RI, and ME, and am available for virtual sessions. I use an integrative approach to psychotherapy, combining insight and skills-based frameworks. I help clients understand how their past experiences and relationships shaped and influence who they are now and how they experience the world (insight), and I help them develop tools for addressing current life situations and for putting that insight to work in moving their lives in the direction they want (skills-based). This approach helps clients link the past which formed them, the present they are living in, and the future they wish to experience.

I also work with a broad range of individuals employed in other “helping professions” (e.g., medical and mental healthcare providers, veterinary medicine professionals, educators, prosecutors, clergy) whose careers may have been negatively impacted by job and/or personal circumstances.

Anxiety Therapists
What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
