I work with clients struggling with alcohol and substance abuse as well as those who question their alcohol use and fall into the gray area of alcohol consumption and would like to examine this more closely.
Hello. I am a licensed clinical social worker in Boston, MA with over 20 years of experience in both clinical settings and private practice. My style is flexible and includes elements of psychodynamic therapy as well as solution focused techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy. People often find their way to treatment due to a life transition or circumstance in which the usual methods of coping no longer are effective. Finding a connection with a supportive experienced therapist can be invaluable in not only managing the transition but finding greater meaning going forward.

This too shall pass. You may appear well on the outside, yet be in survival mode. While I’ve had the privilege of working with clients from many walks of life, I’m especially drawn to high functioning types who have at least a semblance of faith or belief in something greater than themselves because I've found it supports the healing process. Suffering is an unavoidable part of life no one can escape or navigate alone. Suffering is often seasonal. Seeking therapy takes courage. I offer an unbiased space where clients can share freely without judgment, feel truly seen / heard, and gain insight to promote progress.

Many individuals enter recovery expecting life to feel settled yet still struggle with stress, irritability, distance in relationships, or a sense of not fully knowing themselves. You may appear successful while feeling lost or unsure of what you want next. My clients are individuals who want clarity, steadiness, stronger connection with the people they care about, and a direction that feels grounded. They want to feel confident, present, and aligned with the person they hope to become. They seek support that helps them understand themselves, improve how they show up in relationships, and move toward a future that feels purposeful.

You don’t need another therapist who nods quietly while you unravel. You need someone who understands the pressure men face today—whether you’re a college student trying to find your footing, a man in mid-life juggling responsibilities, or someone navigating stress, anxiety, relationships, or substance use. I help men make sense of what they’re carrying and give them the tools to move forward with clarity and confidence. I have strong experience supporting clients through anxiety, depression, substance misuse, relationship concerns, academic pressure, & major life transitions. I understand how hard it can be for men to ask for help

I believe therapy is a creative process. My goal in treatment is to help individuals develop a new narrative for their life—a narrative where they are the ones in control and can make the best choices for themselves. I encourage free association in sessions to promote new ways of thinking and a wider range of feelings. This can feel challenging to some individuals, but I am skilled in building the rapport and comfortable space necessary for new (and exciting) thoughts and feelings to emerge.

This client would have an identified area of struggle in their life in which they are actively seeking to learn new ways to approach and interpret their current life circumstances. Possible areas of focus; substance use, relationships, identity, past trauma, attachment, boundary setting, work life balance. They would be willing to commit to consistent sessions to explore and reach a deeper understanding of themselves to increase overall life satisfaction.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
