My expertise is in the area of major loss (illness, aging, dying, significant life change, bereavement ) also caregiving and end-of-life planning. Such challenges are often overwhelming, even immobilizing. A person can feel they have hit a brick wall, and may feel depressed, hopeless, anxious or numb. When they are able to be present to it they may discover surprising gifts, such as inner resources they might not know are there, ways to take better care of themselves, and new understanding of what is most important to them. Some people find that, amazingly, life can be transformed in ways that make it richer than ever.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, experienced working with adults on a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationships, self-esteem, life transitions, loss and grief , and personal growth.
Impediments to happiness are worth exploring. Whether the goal is to better your life, improve your relationship, or become a better parent, change is always possible. Relying predominantly on cognitive behavioral strategies, I'll work with you to alter unhelpful patterns of thinking or behavior, and so change the way you feel. Where appropriate, a psychodynamic approach can uncover patterns influenced by unconscious thought. Many personal troubles are the result of mental processes that are hidden from us - developing insight can allow you to process vulnerable or painful feelings and begin changing those patterns.

I have extensive training and and experience helping people build better relationships and heal from trauma and loss .
If you yearn for a more fulfilling relationship, greater self-esteem, healing from the past, or a more enjoyable and purposeful life, it means you’re paying attention. There’s always room for growth. Perhaps you aspire to improve one aspect of your life or several areas. Maybe you feel discouraged and lost because you’ve worked hard to make things better and haven’t seen a difference, or you’re newly aware of the need for a shift in life and this is your first try; either is okay. Successful change doesn’t have to start with self-confidence or a plan. It just requires the willingness to reach out and not take the journey alone.

Maturity, empathy and well developed listening skills are assets which I offer. I've been especially interested in helping women during pregnancy, and the postpartum period and resolving grief and loss from miscarriages. In addition, addressing issues of depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress in men or women is especially gratifying to me. I often begin by teaching techniques for stress reduction, or in the case of lethargic depression, ways to energize the body, which help people function better quickly. Most important to me is helping people find hidden strengths and restore inner balance.

Some concerns that bring people to me are their experience of loneliness, depression, and anxiety; feelings of worry, emptiness, and sadness; a search for connection and meaning in relationships and work; life transitions; perfectionism; self-doubt; relationship difficulties; divorce; searching for life direction and a sense of purpose; loss and grief ; and exploration of identity. I work with people through collaborative, interactive conversation to help them gain insight, to develop strategies to approach their life challenges, and to feel known and understood. People describe me as empathic, genuine, and with a sense of humor.

If there is one thing we can count on in life is change--expected or unexpected; wanted or unwanted. Perhaps it is a loss , a difficult transition, a new diagnosis, chronic pain, becoming a caregiver, parenting a child with a disability--it could be anything that significantly alters your life plans, your relationships, expectations, sense of self, and day-to-day functioning. People often experience depression, anxiety, relational tension, and feel overwhelmed when faced with a challenging life issue, whether the challenge is short or long-term.

Offering a compassionate, safe place in which you can explore current life challenges that may be difficult to face alone. Relationship conflicts, separations, loss , job changes, eating problems and other addictions, medical illness, mid-life and other transitions often require working in partnership with someone who can help you find your own inner resources to move forward in your life. I have thirty-six years of experience as a medical practitioner working with diverse populations, including college students, young, middle age and older adults. I bring that experience to my psychotherapy work, recognizing the whole person, mind, body and spirit.

"Life feels too hard, too disappointing, too scary. I feel like a terrible person." Feelings are normal. We all have them but sometimes we become overwhelmed and get stuck in patterns that repeat unsatisfying results over and over. Whether from trauma, grief , low self esteem, addictive behaviors or attachment disruptions, I can help you shift toward greater satisfaction and ease in your life by listening and working together to focus in on core areas that have become barriers to your well being.

Unfortunately my practice is often full. I use a warm and collaborative approach, and two decades of clinical experience, I have helped hundreds of adults get relief from a variety of concerns. I am especially helpful in areas of life transitions, anxiety, trauma, and loss . I will actively engage with you to understand the challenge and craft an approach just for you. In the past few years, I have integrated neurofeedback into my practice, and integrate it with my expertise in several therapies that help resolve even longstanding difficulties. My experience has shown that healing and change truly are possible!

I partner with individuals or couples as they cope with life transitions. I firmly believe that a positive relationship with a therapist can help you lead a more fulfilling life. I work to empower my clients to manage grief , depression, anxiety, and the stress we face when we lose a loved one, when starting or ending relationships, when becoming parents or when having professional challenges. I think it's a privilege to bear witness to your experience and I know the decision to seek support is not an easy one.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
