About

Adolescents experience profound physical and psychological changes. These transitions bring about a sense of uniqueness and independence. Managing emotions during this time of discovery can be difficult, but developing knowledge and life skills can help struggling teens acquire the abilities to navigate and enjoy the adolescent years. Looking at situations through a different lens and perspective can build empathy, awareness and understanding. As embedded in my business name, Power of Perspective, the ability to see different perspectives can be life-changing and liberating by building a sense of control over one's emotions.
I use a goal oriented, client-centered approach which is based on the skill of perspective taking and cognitive behavioral therapy. The journey through adolescence is unique to each client and their cognitive developmental stage. My supportive approach takes individuality and each unique situation into account.
Having over twenty eight years of experience working with children and adolescents in various capacities, I can offer the support needed to ensure a smooth journey through these developmental years.

Linda M. Murphy's Groups

Caught in the Middle-support for middle schoolers

Navigating the world of middle school can be intimidating for clients who, most often, have spent all of their previous schooling in an elementary school. This is a client centered/driven group. Therefore, discussion and skill-building will be based on the needs and lagging skills of the individuals in the group. Making, building and maintaining new relationships may be a focus. Organizational skills, self-reliance and self assurance may also be taught and reinforced.

Healthy Boundaries=Healthy Relationships

Adolescents is a time of emotional growth and self-discovery. Clients in this developmental stage often succumb to pressure by peers to take part in risky behaviors. Healthy boundaries and living with personal morals is invaluable while growing into adulthood. Clients will learn why it is important to have healthy boundaries and how this can lead to healthy relationships in all areas of their lives.

Self-Advocacy, a key to success

Adolescents often lack the ability to act as their own self-advocate. This is a life skill that is grounded in feeling worthy of joy, comfort and happiness. Young adults can benefit from communication skills that will carry them into adulthood. An adolescent may communicate in an abrasive way or may just let others take the lead for situations that they should speak up about. This group will empower clients to "stickup for themselves in appropriate ways". Clients will learn the value of effective and straightforward communication. The power of words and how they affect others will be embedded into the group facilitation as well.
