During this highly unusual time in our lives, many people are dealing with anxiety and grief from the loss of loved ones and the loss of normalcy. Many adolescents are searching for a non-judgmental ear to listen to their concerns without dismissing them as trivial. Young adults may be seeking a compassionate therapist with a heart to understand their difficulties about transitioning to the next phase of adulthood. Supportive family members may be at a loss for ways to be comfort relatives during these life transitions.

YOUNG AND ADULT MEN: We are expected to handle a lot: stress, frustrations, work, school, relationships, you name! And, all those things aren’t suppose to get to us. Why is that? Most people believed men can handle anything thrown at us and not be phase...and, we can...most of the time. But, that facade only lasts for little while, then, we crack. I get it! I’ve been there! We look the part, fix the problem, and stuff our emotions. After a while, it all begins to grind on us and that’s when we turn to things to help us numb or check-out. In retrospect, those things worked well at the time but now they're just making matters worse.

Life can throw some curve balls that often knock us down and leave us blindsided--however, painful and difficult experiences do not have to define the essence of you as a person; rather those experiences can be a starting point to creating a more authentic, connected version of yourself. I am passionate about enabling my clients to discover their own path to healing through positivity and empowerment. Life can have us feeling stuck and going in circles. It's during these times we may decide we need a place to sit figure out where to go next. Stephen specializes in helping couples work through connection issues and individuals work through issues of trauma, anxiety, and depression. Stephen has a particular interest in working with people struggling with matters of gender and sexuality and those who have experienced spiritual abuse and shame as a result. Prior to returning to the field of psychotherapy, Stephen had a career in law enforcement working as a police officer in St. Louis city and as an FBI agent before coming to terms with the fact that he was better suited to be an agent of mercy and healing rather than an agent of justice.

Welcome! My name is Julie Evans, and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in Tennessee (License #1134). I am currently practicing individual, couples, and family therapy in the context of telemedicine. With over a decade of experience, it has been my privilege to work with diverse clients across the lifespan. In the context of individual therapy, I use different treatment modalities dependent upon a client's goals and needs. I am certified in Emotion Focused Therapy and primarily use this treatment modality with couples and families. I am also Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) trained.

Often what brings someone into therapy, their current struggles, are symptoms of an underlying unresolved experience which has thrown life out of balance. Anxiety and depression, for example, frequently are a pattern of being stuck in a state of imbalance, following a significant loss, heartbreak or trauma. My specialties center around helping professional men and women, athletes (current/former HS,College,Pro) and teenage boys. Each individual is different but if you are my client you will be validated, cared for and feel like a semi rockstar at times. My previous experience as a professional football player taught me people will grow if they have someone in their corner who cares, understands, and compassionately challenges them on a consistent basis. This is what I set out to do in therapy for my clients every time we meet.

My therapeutic approach is client-centered and integrative in nature, while being deeply influenced by attachment theory. In my experience both as a client and as a therapist, Emotionally Focused Therapy is the most powerful therapeutic approach to couples therapy. Too often, people focus on the content of what is wrong ("Why can't he load the dishwasher correctly?" or "Why won't she stop nagging me?") rather than the process of what is actually happening ("I need to feel respected and heard" or "I need more connection"). EFT has been found through much research to effect lasting change and connection.
