I am a training analyst and supervisor at NPAP and Blanton-Peale Institute, and a professor at CUNY. I use a psychodynamic approach allied with an interpersonal or relational orientation.
I interact with clients as they come to grips with the hurtful circumstances of the past- or recent events- that have undermined self-esteem or their sense of self and resulted in poor personal choices and decision making in the present.
I understand the persistence of unproductive or destructive modes of behavior, or the difficulty of seeing oneself in a new, hopeful light and acting in accord with such insight.
I think every therapist has had to acknowledge and confront his own personal difficulties before presuming to be of service in helping others to do so. Through interaction, I help people overcome damaging or demoralizing circumstances imposed on them by their upbringing or by events beyond their control.
A self-respecting identity is a multifaceted thing, and people have to strive to become the buoyant, achieving, or self-reliant individuals they want to be. This is the challenge I share with my patients that cuts across ethnic or cultural lines and emphasizes the spirit of shared humanity.
