I provide therapy from the belief that therapy is a collaborative journey in which, together, we identify what gets in the way of life goals. Then we create a vision along with a plan to go from where you are to where you want to be in their life. I have participated in extensive training as a family and couples therapist with over 10 years of practice experience. Families in which one member exhibits the symptoms of ADHD, ADD, oppositional and defiant behaviors, impulsive and violent behaviors, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and learning disabilities work well with me.

My experience with the public school system makes me well equipped to address learning and behavioral concerns, evaluation questions, family dynamics, and systems navigation.
My practice with children, adolescents, and adults reflects the core values of strengths-based frameworks, empowerment, and self-determination. Change is a difficult process, and is best facilitated in a judgement-free environment. I support growth and healing with a warm and empathetic approach. I also believe that therapy can be fun, and I encourage creativity and humor in the treatment setting.

Evaluations can be helpful for admission to private schools, identification of learning or processing disorders, diagnosis of ADHD, as part of an application for standardized test accommodations, or to gather more information about emotional functioning.
I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults who are experiencing difficulties such as anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, behavioral problems, and social concerns. I use a cognitive-behavioral treatment approach, with family and school consultation as important components of the treatment. Consultation with physicians, psychiatrists, and other treatment providers is also welcomed. I believe in using a collaborative problem-solving approach in which we work as a team to develop an intervention plan.

I have experience working with adolescents, and adults who are struggling with a range of life situations such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, sexual abuse/trauma and relationship issues. I am interested in you as an individual and am committed to helping you learn what causes you to be stuck and repeating dysfunctional patterns. My approach is active, direct and flexible. I do not stay stuck in the past, but I do use past trauma as a tool to help you learn how these wounds are causing present day conflict. You will use practical strategies to create a life that meets your emotional, social and spiritual needs.

I highly value trust and connection in order for humans to heal. I bring my authentic self and transparency into session in order to give clients the ability to be fully themselves. My goal is to help ease psychological suffering brought on by trauma and other negative life circumstances and then make sense of the overwhelming emotions/responses. It is through compassion and connection that corrective emotional experiences can occur. I believe that our ability to both experience and understand our Self and others is a key component in building secure (emotionally safe) relationships.

Through a holistic and integrative approach I support individuals and families to navigate the unique challenges that life has unfolded for them. Whether our work takes place in my office or out in nature, I help my clients identify, cultivate and nourish their strengths and resources. Through our work my clients deepen their connection to themselves, others and the natural world. As these connections grow I support my clients to uncover limiting patterns that inhibit their relationships, creativity and happiness so they can nourish new ways of moving and relating in the world that support authenticity, ease, and joy.

I am trained in EMDR for relief of trauma and both behavioral and psychodynamic/talking therapies which emphasize positive habits, good health and personal insight. Any change starts from within and sometimes we all need another perspective to grasp the whole picture so that problems or obstacles can be sensibly, sensitively and effectively handled. I work from a strengths-based orientation whereby the talents, skills, and interests can be identified. So we go from there, to where the individual learns to utilize those strengths in resolving problems, conflicts, stressors as well as finding sources of comfort, competence and confidence.

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
