When describing my work as a therapist, I often say that therapy is the art of having awkward conversations about things that most people prefer not to discuss. The things that come up during therapy sessions aren’t often broached around the dinner table or at social gatherings, so talking about them can feel overwhelming, uncomfortable, and weird, especially if a person is worried about how others will respond. Sometimes, though, these conversations become necessary when mental health concerns start interfering with a person’s ability to live their life, enjoy their relationships, and reach their goals. This is where I come in.
My goal as a therapist is to provide my clients with a safe place to discuss whatever is on their minds and find solutions that work for them within the context of their relationships and lives. No problem is too big or too small, and it is often through working through the small problems that we learn how to handle the bigger ones.
I approach therapy from a strong social justice perspective. This has become particularly necessary in light of the current political climate in the US, which has made life increasingly difficult for many people. I stand in solidarity with anyone facing discrimination and oppression and my office is a safe place to explore these concerns.
