Many sources suggest that farmers aren’t people. They say farmers have different risks for depression, anxiety, and suicide than everybody else. Lanie Doerr, licensed professional counselor and former farmer, disagrees. She says farmers are people with the same basic, personal risk factors as everyone else. I have worked in other fields. I grew up working on my family's wheat farm. I was a chemist in an environmental testing laboratory for a year after my bachelor's degree. Then I was an insurance agent for 14 years. Most recently, I farmed for 12 years before becoming a counselor.
