I primarily use a mindfulness based approach in my therapeutic interventions.
We all encounter challenges along our journey; challenges like breakups, illnesses, grief, and natural disasters. While we can’t control what happens around us, we can choose how we respond. I see significant life events as opportunities for personal growth. My passion is working with clients who have a desire to become the best version of themselves through self-exploration and a willingness to adopt thought and behavior patterns that support their mental and physical health.

"HELPING BUILD A BETTER YOU". . . . . a mental-behavioral-spiritual growth approach to counseling, looking to history and life span development in understanding one's personality (including family of origin, religious imagination and formation, body image, significant transitional periods, major changes in life, physical problems), helping plan one's future - utilizing one's inner resources and strengths - minimizing symptoms of mental disturbance and maximizing one's ability to flourish through mindfulness techniques and an observant objective posture toward life's choices and attitudes - hopefully leading to the enjoyment of spiritual, mental, physical and emotional balance.

Waitlist for new clients
Approach is psychoanalytically based with strong ties to: attachment theory, human development, mindfulness, and the mind-body connection.
"SAFE HAVEN" was the exact words one of my first clients used to describe our time together. It was this sense of safety and connection that allowed her to explore life events that had previously kept her: isolated, fearful and angry. Our work together, incorporated directive based and open therapeutic art-making to help her share the burden of her trauma, understand how she was feeling in relation to what she had experienced and to facilitate forming a new sense of direction.

I take an eclectic approach and use a blend of Cognitive Behavioral, Reality Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Solution Focused, Reality Based, and psycho-education to individuals age 5 and up. My theory is that when people have hope and can learn to challenge and replace irrational thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes, people are free to experience change.

I enjoy working with clients who are struggling to deal with overpowering emotions, manage problem behaviors, or navigate difficult relationships. These difficulties might show up in lots of different ways, such as depression (including feeling suicidal), anxiety, self-harm, abusing substances, self-criticism or shame, or other ways. I understand how painful these challenges can cause life to feel, and have great admiration and respect for those who want to take action to feel better.

As a therapist, who has been trained in the field of social work, I operate from a strengths perspective as well as meeting clients where they are at. Therapy should be a collaborative effort in which the client is an active participant. My role is to help my clients to gain insight about themselves, behavior patterns, and their relationships, and then utilize their strengths to overcome life's obstacles and reach the goals they have set for themselves. The ideal client for me, is someone who is motivated for change. I have experience working with diverse populations in various settings and enjoy helping people from all backgrounds.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
