for PTSD and stress related disorders, Emotionally Focused Therapy for Individuals and for Couples, grief, loss, and transition counseling.
The first sign of a serious struggle is often the condition of our relationships with others. Becoming reactive in an automatic, negative way can lead to shame and broken bonds with friends, family, and co-workers. "Why am I like this," you may ask. Loneliness, depression and social anxiety? Maybe we feel misunderstood by what we can't find words for. "But I had a great childhood," you may say. Unintentional wounds can be caused by good people in bad situations, and you may have unexplored pain to heal. Family alcoholism, abuse, ADHD, and trauma can further complicate the lives of adolescents and adults alike damaging self-esteem.

If you are old enough to have received an invitation to join AARP in the mail - a milestone, definitely! - you may find yourself facing issues that are, directly or indirectly, related to aging. Some examples might be preparing for or adjusting to retirement, changing family dynamics, physical declines that can come with or be exacerbated by age, grief over deaths of our peers or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), to name a few. You may well be wanting a robust response to these challenges. After all, quality of life throughout our senior years is what it is all about.

As your therapist, I bring 30 years of experience working with individuals, families, and couples who are dealing with depression, anxiety, anger, grief/loss, addiction and marital problems.
If going to therapy is somewhat fearful, you are not alone. Most people do not know what to expect. Scientific research shows that psychotherapy works. Therapy can help you feel more comfortable being the real you. The goal of psychotherapy is not to change you. Change is your choice. It is to help build self-awareness, increase compassion, understanding, respect, empathy and acceptance toward yourself and others.

Life happens, and sometimes life happens hard. Do you find that when you fall, you have a hard time getting back up again? Do you feel stuck and like you can’t find your way out? I often come across people just like you; feeling a loss of identity, questioning themselves, and whether or not they have purpose. The hurt and pain you’ve endured can obscure this one truth: YOU, My Dear, have purpose.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
