My initial clinical training was
psychodynamic
and over the years I have added other types of interventions (such as CBT) based on my clients' needs.
I have many years of experience working with folks with a history of trauma and substance abuse issues. I believe that these two things often go hand in hand - people using substances to help deal with the painful feelings associated with trauma. Most recently I have focused on working with the LGBTQ communities to address issues related to societal and familial rejection, isolation, bullying and low self worth. I have found that providing queer affirming therapy in a nonjudgmental environment can be very healing to clients.

I prefer to mix behavioral and
psychodynamic
interventions to help clients change behaviors they don't like while finding the reasons why some part of the client believes a behavior will help.
I love working with older adults (age 40+) seeking help to process a life event or past trauma. Caregiving for a partner with dementia and the death of a loved one are life events that cause overwhelming emotions, but any life event can cause stress. Even happy events like retirement, buying a new home, sending a kid off to college, or gaining a family member bring feelings of grief and loss. My clients typically seek help coping with more feelings than usual, healing from a loss, and hope to feel like themselves again. Other clients may be aware of unhealed trauma from childhood that they now feel ready to process.

Theoretically I mainly work using
psychodynamic
techniques.
Welcome! I have 10+ years of experience working as a psychotherapist and tend to focus on childhood trauma, self-acceptance, and the idea that most of our well-being comes from within ourselves. I treat most mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, compulsive behaviors, substance abuse and relationship conflict. I believe that the therapeutic relationship can be the most healing part of therapy and tend to use that as a guide.

People "SEEK" therapy because they NEED change; changes in life circumstances, or in how they see things, think, feel, or behave… and sometimes, it’s ALL of these. They need a psychotherapist who will make a firm commitment to effecting whatever these changes need to be. By applying skilled and thorough assessment techniques to understand just how the discontentment is maintaining itself, then applying research-proven techniques to undo these present processes and create new ones. Unhappiness, pain, and suffering need to be alleviated and transformed into feeling well, contented, and in charge of your life and how you experience it.

My approach to healing is eclectic,
psychodynamic
and experiential.
Life as Art Studio was conceived to help individuals, families, groups and organizations find their truth, find their voice. The mission is to work together to unearth talents and unblock creativity. To do so I use primarily action methods through my extensive training in psychodrama. The belief is that most of us need to increase our spontaneity in order become more authentic, true to who we really are. We may suffer because we have lost or never found who that true self is. Maybe we have been taught to think we must be some one else's idea of who and how we should be in the world.

I utilize a broadly
psychodynamic
approach that blends attachment-based, Internal Family Systems, DBT, and narrative components to create a trauma-informed, holistic approach.
Welcome! I approach therapy as a collaborative process aimed at developing insight, acceptance, and trust in the self. Making changes outside often requires us to first look inward to listen and understand; when you are able to make sense of your internal world, you are better equipped to build the life you want from a place of centered awareness. Through our work together, we create a compassionate space to examine relational patterns, process trauma, and ultimately make a new story for you centered in healing.

My therapy approach is mostly existential and
psychodynamic
.
Most people who contact me for therapy are serious about getting the help they need. They want a therapist they can trust. As a clinical social worker I work with my clients to help them identify their goals and challenges. Like most therapists I offer a safe environment, acceptance, and concern. I may also offer feedback and make suggestions but I believe that it is the client's responsibility to decide how they want to resolve their specific issues.

In my practice as a Creative Arts Therapist, I feel that it’s important to acknowledge the holistic complexity of the human experience. I believe that anxiety and ambivalence are perfectly natural responses to the stress and trauma that we’re exposed to just by existing in the world, especially in the time we’re living through. My approach incorporates Humanistic, Trauma-Informed, Psychoeducational, Family Systems, and
Psychodynamic
modalities, based on the needs of the individual. I also place an emphasis on working with the somatic experience of mental health. I maintain a commitment to Antiracist, LGBTQIA+ allied practices.

Psychodynamic
therapy promotes deep and lasting change by exploring the subjective world of each client.
People entering therapy are often overwhelmed with distressing thoughts and emotions. Others feel stuck repeating destructive behaviors or chasing dissatisfying relationships. Many clients have tried therapy in the past and want a deeper approach that gets to the root of their issues.

I have a private practice dedicated to seeing adults and couples with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, and sexual topics. Facing personal difficulties can be challenging. Therapy is a unique opportunity to address concerns and start a process of psychological growth that can continue to be of benefit even after therapy has ended. My training is in
psychodynamic
psychotherapy. This modality favors looking at the source of problems. Listening, curiosity, and empathy are cornerstones of my approach.

*Be aware I am not currently taking any new patients due to my schedule being completely full for the foreseeable future. I believe that healing can happen through the process of empathic and supportive counseling. I work with mood issues, personality disorders, grief, substance use and much more. I utilize a culturally sensitive and holistic
psychodynamic
style of therapy. This approach encourages development in all areas of life (relationships, thoughts, behaviors, emotions, careers, etc.), and pays special attention to unconscious factors and cultural identity (race, religion, sexuality, gender, disability, etc).

I approach counseling from a
psychodynamic
lens that includes somatic and cognitive techniques.
I believe counseling provides a meaningful exploration of your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being for you to navigate issues with more self-awareness and capability. I provide a counseling space free of judgment. I view counseling as a process in which you, the client, and I, the counselor, establish rapport and trust one another to explore the self, come together as a team to examine presenting problems, develop solutions, and work towards achieving goals to create wellness and improve your overall quality of life.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
