I use Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (
EMDR
) for traumatic memories.
This is a beginning; change is difficult. It's strength, not weakness, to seek help and make changes. Learning how to see our behaviors from a different perspective is valuable. Healing often comes through verbalizing our feelings. You will feel heard, respected, validated, receive constructive feedback and gain greater insight and understanding in a safe, non-judgmental environment. I focus on your strengths as a means to help facilitate change and promote independence. I am a very down-to-earth person and I am often told by my clients that it's easy to talk and relate to me.

I am an
EMDR
therapist licensed in Louisiana, Texas and North Carolina.
You spend most of your time shining a light on the needs of others, leaving your own experience in the shadows. As a helper, healer or caregiver, you pour yourself out to others in your work and at home. You believe that you do what you do because you have a vision for a better world, but the daily reality of taking on the cares of others leaves you feeling numb and detached - or constantly on alert and unable to relax. Call it anxiety, depression, burnout, overwhelm - the bottom line is that it sucks the creativity, compassion, joy right out of you, leaving you drained. A more balanced life IS possible, and I can help.

I practice a trauma-sensitive approach including multiple trauma-informed care techniques such as
EMDR
, Somatic Experiencing and Emotionally-Focused Therapy.
Trauma affects attachment styles and healthy regulation of our Autonomic Nervous System. Awareness of your body's response to trauma are important components of knowing oneself. The therapeutic relationship is a crucible for change. A large component of traumatic stress is that it can disconnect us from self, community and the earth. I am here to walk with you and to guide you towards the answers that already reside inside you.

My intention as a therapist is to create a reflective space and to bring you clarity and support. We will explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and together we will consider whether they are working for you. We will expand your awareness of your personal processes and protective patterns, both internally and in relationships and how these play out in your mind and body. With this deeper understanding of your self, we will shift perspective and create more opportunity for choice. My role is to facilitate the removal of barriers that prevent connection to your self and others through a systemic and interpersonal approach.

EMDR
, EFT (tapping), and the evidence-based trauma treatments for contemporary PTSD and Complex (early childhood) PTSD.
People "SEEK" therapy because they NEED change; changes in life circumstances, or in how they see things, think, feel, or behave… and sometimes, it’s ALL of these. They need a psychotherapist who will make a firm commitment to effecting whatever these changes need to be. By applying skilled and thorough assessment techniques to understand just how the discontentment is maintaining itself, then applying research-proven techniques to undo these present processes and create new ones. Unhappiness, pain, and suffering need to be alleviated and transformed into feeling well, contented, and in charge of your life and how you experience it.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
