I specialize in treating complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and adult survivors of family dysfunction.
Please contact me via email for inquiries! Have you seen a few therapists but felt that you were unable to get to the roots of your issues and experience transformational change and lasting relief? I believe that desensitizing the body's threat response creates the internal safety to respond to situations in a healthier way. I work with clients who are looking for new ways to cope with life, and seek to change the behaviors and thinking patterns that are no longer serving them. The way that we think and feel about ourselves has a profound impact on our quality of life and how we work through our problems.

If you are feeling this way, Brighter Days are here! My name is Yanada G. Essex. My varied work history has afforded me the opportunity to work with individuals and families facing a wide range of life challenges. I have the most experience in working with those suffering from anxiety and/or depressive disorders, coping with grief/loss, experiencing family conflict or interpersonal difficulties, or dealing with the lasting impact of traumatic experience. I primarily work with individuals but understand the role and importance of family and therefore include family members as necessary. I view my role as helping the individual to define existing problems, identify realistic goals, and actualize those goals.

Emotional pain manifests in many ways: addictions, depression, unresolved grief, self-sabotage, under earning and debting, over eating, troubled interpersonal relationships and family conflict and health issues.
Life as Art Studio was conceived to help individuals, families, groups and organizations find their truth, find their voice. The mission is to work together to unearth talents and unblock creativity. To do so I use primarily action methods through my extensive training in psychodrama. The belief is that most of us need to increase our spontaneity in order become more authentic, true to who we really are. We may suffer because we have lost or never found who that true self is. Maybe we have been taught to think we must be some one else's idea of who and how we should be in the world.

From the time I was young, I knew I cared. I cared about people and wanted to help others experience more fulfilling lives and relationships. I didn’t realize at the time that I wanted those experiences for myself as well. My experience growing up in a family where addiction caused great pain led me to my own problematic relationships with people, food, money and religion. Now I care about myself in ways that I never imagined possible before taking those first scary steps into my therapist’s office and asking for help. I experience life and relationships in more rewarding ways than was previously possible for me.

I offer individual, couple, family and group therapy.
Psychotherapy can be one of the most valuable life experiences a person can have. Yet finding the right therapist may seem like an overwhelming task. I believe that establishing trust in the therapeutic relationship is critical before any meaningful or lasting change can result from a particular "technique." It is important to feel confident in your therapist's competency, compassion and character in order to build a safe, trusting relationship in which growth and change can occur. I hope that the personal statements made by therapists in this directory will help you find a good match for your particular needs.

I also specialize in working with younger children/adolescents and empowering parents for better family dynamics.
Therapy involves collaborating together to identify your strengths and to develop effective solutions to the issues, patterns, thoughts and actions you are experiencing in your life. I strive to provide clarification, encouragement, interpretation and information to facilitate you working toward your desired goals. Our emphasis will be on here-and-now choices to re-orient yourself to the present rather than just exploring the past. We all have an underlying drive to reach our maximum potential; I see therapy as a tool for uncovering that drive and finding self-actualization and my role is to encourage you in that exploration.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
