If you feel your behaviors, substance, or alcohol use has either taken over your life or simply began to slip beyond your control, there is a way out.
My ideal client is anyone suffering from chemical or process addiction (gambling, sex, food, etc) or alcoholism. Addiction and alcoholism are tremendously destructive forces that leave us feeling alone, isolated, and often defeated, but this can be overcome and recovery is possible. If you feel that addiction/alcoholism has you trapped with no escape, give me a call, and together we will find the keys to lasting sobriety. If you have ever thought that you may need to seek help for your drinking or drug use, or just need to talk, now is the time. There is a better way to live and together we can make it happen.

Have you seen a few therapists but felt that you were unable to get to the roots of your issues and experience transformational change and lasting relief? I believe that treating root traumas can lead to greater self-awareness. Desensitizing the body's threat response creates the internal safety to respond to situations in a healthier way. I work with clients who are looking for new ways to cope with life, and seek to change the behaviors and thinking patterns that are no longer serving them. The way that we think and feel about ourselves has a profound impact on our quality of life and how we work through our problems.

I am a patient, compassionate, non-judgmental therapist who understands struggle and uncertainty. I believe that people are generally doing their best, and that growth and change is hard, uncomfortable, and scary. I think having someone help you navigate your path can be instrumental to moving forward through tough times or transitions. It can also help to be challenged when you are stuck in your safety zone. I offer individual therapy for partners dealing with relational problems who are coming to therapy for the first time, who are unsure about whether they will benefit from therapy, or who are skeptical about therapy in general.

Most of my clients are ordinary people who have been sexually abused as children or adults, or are from alcoholic families, or are struggling with alcoholism in their current life. They may be having difficulty adjusting to changing circumstaaances in their lives due to divorce or loss of a family member or friend. Many of my clients are experiencing depression or anxiety or chronic worry.

I believe counseling is a holistic, healing and empowering process. There are many times throughout our lives when we get stuck in transitions, feelings, or in our own mind. Counseling helps us get comfortable within ourselves. It creates self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-compassion which in turn changes our perspective as we walk through our daily life.

My approach to counseling is holistic and based on the client's needs. I use methodology from humanistic psychology, person-centered therapy, psychodynamic theory and cognitive behavioral therapy. I help clients identify hidden strengths and discover obstacles to a more meaningful life. I work with the client on building an authentic therapeutic relationship where the client is seen as the expert in her/his own life. I do this in a compassionate, safe, and nonjudgmental process. I am effective in working with people who seek short-term, solution-focused therapy as well as longer-term therapeutic goals.

I empower individuals and couples to change their perceptions about issues that are unhealthy and assist them in facilitating positive change. I approach therapy with clients from a wellness model (having issues they need assistance managing) as opposed to a medical model (being broken and needing to be fixed). My favorite quote is from Alfred Adler in 1927, "The hardest thing for human beings to do is to know themselves and to change themselves." I enjoy helping clients gain insight that can be helpful to facilitate change in perceptions and ultimately in their lives. I have evenings and weekend availability.

I have had the opportunity to work in the medical profession prior to my working as a therpaist. I worked as a nurse in many disciplines and particularly psychiatry, learning how to treat mental health issues at the extreme of the mental health disorders. I am now working as an independent therpist and have worked primarily in the field of chemical dependency treatment and am presently treating clients in my private practice with diagnoses of chemical dependency, anxiety, depression, and other issues with mental health. I prefer to work collaratively with clients where we, together develop a plan of care for the client's goals.

Therapy involves collaborating together to identify your strengths and to develop effective solutions to the issues, patterns, thoughts and actions you are experiencing in your life. I strive to provide clarification, encouragement, interpretation and information to facilitate you working toward your desired goals. Our emphasis will be on here-and-now choices to re-orient yourself to the present rather than just exploring the past. We all have an underlying drive to reach our maximum potential; I see therapy as a tool for uncovering that drive and finding self-actualization and my role is to encourage you in that exploration.

Many of my clients are successful and thriving in ways that people may see on the outside, but their inner experiences of themselves and how they are in relation to the world and the people in their lives are often one of disconnection and dissatisfaction. Many of these feelings come from a variety of sources such as: anxiety, depression, a disordered relationship with food or one's body, and an estranged experience with oneself. People who want to develop a sense of self-awareness and understanding often find working with me beneficial.

From the time I was young, I knew I cared. I cared about people and wanted to help others experience more fulfilling lives and relationships. I didn’t realize at the time that I wanted those experiences for myself as well. My experience growing up in a family where addiction caused great pain led me to my own problematic relationships with people, food, money and religion. Now I care about myself in ways that I never imagined possible before taking those first scary steps into my therapist’s office and asking for help. I experience life and relationships in more rewarding ways than was previously possible for me.

I believe that our greatest struggles can prove to be our most important teachers, and invitations to connect to our higher selves. Changing our long standing patterns and holding space of our deepest pain can feel daunting and scary to confront on our own. Yet, with support and guidance, you will find that change is possible and that there is hope.

I provide empathy & compassion to create a safe space for people to heal. Together we create a therapeutic relationship that allows for creativity & reflection. The human psyche can be a rather dark place. I shine light on areas that need attention. Ultimately, this helps us learn what is needed for you to grow & thrive. I have worked in shelters for unhoused teenagers & families, correctional facilities, organizations for survivors of domestic violence & sexual assault & on the behavioral health unit at a hospital for children & teenagers. I focus on psycho-somatic practices to bring balance into the lives of my clients.

I am taking new clients right now, but most openings are bi-weekly. Recognizing that you cannot handle something on your own takes a lot of courage. My goal is to understand you and what you have experienced in your life that has led to difficult times. I will assist you in identifying what changes can be made in order to lead a happier and healthier life. I view the therapeutic relationship as non-judgmental, safe, and supportive. It's not my goal to tell you how to change or better your life, but to go on the journey with you and explore how making effective changes can lead to a happier you.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
