Asking for help is difficult, sometimes overwhelming. Most people are touched by anxiety, depression, relationship issues and even addiction at some point in their lives, either within themselves or a family member. I create a safe, relaxing and inviting space for you to begin dealing with these difficult, but treatable issues. Many people, particularly men, are socialized to ignore or never discuss their innermost feelings and worries. College students often struggle with questions about whom they are and whom they want to become. Parents often feel powerless to help their children. Together, we can work toward achieving your goals.

I am familiar with the struggles that many mental health challenges have on the routines of everyday life, such as school and work. I'm a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, which means that I help people to work through their issues from a body-oriented approach, focusing on autonomic nervous system responses; i.e. flight, flight, freeze, etc. I strive to create a warm and safe therapeutic space that allows healing to naturally take place. My approach is person-centered and collaborative; with each client receiving individualized care depending on their life history, current issues, and personal goals. I have special interest in helping people who experience caregiver burnout, anxiety, grief, and other trauma-related symptoms.

I work with children, adolescents, adults, and couples, addressing a variety of challenges, including anxiety, depression, family issues, relationships, self-esteem, anger management, ADHD, personality disorder, behavioral challenges, etc. I have 16 years of experience providing intensive outpatient counseling to individuals and groups. I strongly believe that counseling is a partnership between the therapist and the client, designed to arrive at the needed objectives and goals. Whereas the therapist has skills and training, the client is always the expert on themselves and their families. Only through working together with regard for the dignity and worth of each individual can challenges be alleviated and strengths enhanced.

I enjoy working with children and adults in a personalized approach tailored to each patient's unique situation. My theoretical background is rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, play therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, but I pull from many sources in creating a treatment plan. I enjoy tackling diagnostic puzzles and working closely with patients and families to get to the bottom of what causes disruption in someone's life. Most consider me direct and no nonsense. I trained in Exposure Response Prevention for OCD treatment in both children and adults and enjoy these treatment challenges.

Ten plus years of experience in effective outpatient individualized psychological care enables me to provide effective treatment. There are a number of mental illnesses and substance use disorders that are in my practice. It is important that individuals and families are provided a neutral ground to problem solve. It is important to build rapport, identify a goal and objectives in the beginning of treatment. You may be fearful to make the initial phone call but you will not have regrets.

As a counselor, I have enjoyed the privilege of working with clients from all walks of life. I have experience providing services for the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use disorder, as well problems related to life changes. I've also received training for domestic violence intervention and treatment, with extensive experience providing services to men seeking help addressing violence within their intimate relationships. I feel that counseling is most effective when the client and the clinician connect in a way that encourages honest feedback and empowerment for the client.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists
What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?
Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.
What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?
Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.
What kinds of problems does therapy help with?
Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.
What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?
Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
