Life can be incredibly challenging. Often we have visions of the life we want to live, but we can't figure out why we're unable to realize our dreams. Better health, better relationships, increased stability, less worry, more happiness- all of these things can seem just outside of our reach. Life can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be.

I am a Certified Family and Divorce Mediator. My skills and experience allow me to be compassionate, ethical, and effective. I am Certified in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). What would it feel like to finally stop hiding? To not dread your phone, your spouse's eyes, or your own reflection? Maybe it's porn, affairs, or compulsive sexual behavior you can't stop. The shame is crushing, your marriage is hanging by a thread, and you feel alone. Or maybe you're the spouse who discovered the betrayal. You're devastated, angry, wondering what was real. You want to stop the cycle, save your marriage, and finally feel free.

Way to go, you have taken the first (and often the most difficult) step towards emotional growth and self-discovery! Emotions extend far beyond simple labels like "happy," "sad," or "mad" for most individuals. Navigating the complexity of those thoughts, feelings, and emotions alone can be quite a daunting and overwhelming task...that's where I come in. I'm Taylor Callais-Rusich and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Lafayette, LA. Therapy is a process of self-discovery where you, as the client, can have a safe space to allow your true self to explore without fear of judgement.

First of all, thank you for being here. I know how hard it is to ask for help. Second, I want you to know that you are not alone, even if it may feel like it. Our emotions sometimes get ahead of us and causes us to react without thinking. At times, we either feel like we are "too much" or "not enough". The world around us always seems to have an opinion about who we should be before we get the chance to find out for ourselves. Feeling lost and unsure is a part of life, but it doesn't have to stay that way. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor ready and waiting to help you. You have made the first step. Let's keep walking together.

My approach to therapy entails utilizing an eclectic approach. It uses an eclectic approach to assist clients with every area of their life that requires help. The first step I take when starting therapy is ensuring that the client understands that this is their safe space and they feel comfortable. My main theoretical approaches are solution-focused brief therapy, person-centered therapy, cognitive therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. I utilize these therapies quite often because the problem is identified and then we start focusing on the solution.

I work primarily with issues of depression, anxiety, child abuse, neglect, grief, and trauma. Helping someone through difficult issues is a collaboration between therapist and client. It takes courage to show up for therapy and trust someone to help! I practiced and taught meditation as a means for recovering from trauma for 30 years before becoming a therapist. Meditation develops a stronger, calmer mind, but doesn't completely clear psychological issues, unless you've the luxury of years of intense practice. For faster results than talk therapy or meditation alone, I integrate them to build self-awareness and stability.

My ideal client is someone who’s tired of just “holding it all together.” On the outside, they may appear high-functioning, successful, reliable, strong, but inside, they feel disconnected, anxious, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Many come to me navigating trauma, codependency, burnout, or the deep ache of unmet intimacy. They’re not looking for a quick fix. They want real healing. They want to feel safe in their body again, to reclaim their voice, to stop shrinking or performing for others. They’re longing to access more aliveness, more joy, more truth, more freedom in how they move through the world.

Stuck in your head? As a therapist, I seek to help you resolve life difficulties as QUICKLY and painlessly as possible. I start by meeting you right where you are today, honoring your individual experiences, relationships, & identity. From there, we can work together to identify new skills, coping strategies, areas for growth, and inherent strengths you may not have been able to see before. Not only is each individual story unique, but the response is too. Some have trouble identifying or expressing how they’ve been impacted by their experiences, while others notice the effects but aren’t sure how to make sense of them.

We are a team in this. I believe in teamwork during therapy. If the client appears to be doing most of the work, then that is extreme progress. If I as the therapist is doing most of the work, then we may need to rethink and regroup on the treatment to best fit the client. It is the client's responsibility to communicate with therapist on any issues or any adjustments that needs to be made. I want to walk alongside those who are seeking reach a better end and better livelihoods.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
