I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and my passion in life is working with children and their families. It is my joy to help children through difficult times at home or at school - divorce, grief/loss, bullying, poor academic performance, peer issues, anger management, self-esteem, anxiety, coping skills/adjusting to new situations, ADHD. I have worked in the school system as a teacher and school counselor for almost 10 years and this has allowed me to see first-hand the struggles many children face on a daily basis and how this can affect their academic performance as well as their friendships and home life.

Way to go, you have taken the first (and often the most difficult) step towards emotional growth and self-discovery! For most individuals emotions are so much more than "happy", "sad", or "mad". Navigating the complexity of those thoughts, feelings, and emotions alone can be quite a daunting and overwhelming task...that's where I come in. I'm Taylor Callais-Rusich and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Lafayette, LA. Therapy is a process of self-discovery where you, as the client, can have a safe space to allow your true self to explore without fear of judgement.

Whether working with children or adults, I practice from a person-centered approach which relies heavily on the relationship between the client and counselor. As such, I see the counseling relationship as a critical element for change and work to create a warm, safe, and welcoming environment for my clients. I view counseling through a trauma-informed lens since so many individuals have been affected by trauma and adverse childhood experiences. I understand the importance of empowering young people with the necessary tools to be successful and have enjoyed working with young children for more than 18 years.

In the therapy room, I love working with folks who find that they are struggling to fit in and connect with others - folks who might not feel that they have someone who GETS them. Maybe you feel like the black sheep of your family. Maybe you feel like you stand out in your community in some way. Perhaps you're ready to make some changes and feel nervous about how the new you will be accepted. I'm here to be a support and a guide, when needed, as you begin your new journey. Additionally, I love working with women and parents, with folks trying to learn how to live lives more true to their core values, and with folks in relationship.

I became a counselor to help hurting people and trauma survivors heal and restore their wholeness. I embrace them with compassion and acceptance, because I understand struggling and what it feels like to need someone to listen and believe you. Clients are welcome to bring in their spirituality, their fears, and their taboos. A safe, calm space can help clients process their worries and problems, as well as use helpful coping skills to transform lives. Every client's situation is unique and I use integrative approaches to help them heal as a whole person in mind-body-spirit.

As a person who has worked through depression and several life changing events, I can understand feeling hopeless, stuck, and confused. Experiencing a death, divorce or a traumatic experience can lead you to a low, dark place in your life. It is common for these past experiences to affect your current life by manifesting as depression or anxiety. Be encouraged, there are ways to get you from where you are, to the life your heart desires. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a National Certified Counselor with over 30 years experience. I am trained in EMDR( Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) for trauma and PTSD.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
