It can be a deeply frustrating challenge to understand a
child
when they express themselves so differently than adults.
No matter what traumatic events you or your
child
may have experienced, every person has an opportunity to grow into a whole and healthy being. Because of the misunderstandings and chaos that often result from childhood trauma, Tammy works from an attachment lens, seeing behavior as the different ways people have chosen to survive the traumatic circumstances they have experienced. Tammy works with
children
, adolescents, and adults.

Do you function fairly well in most ways, but have some nagging issues (i.e. you struggle to trust, have a history of unhealthy or unsatisfying intimate relationships, trouble concentrating) that may be the result of past trauma? Do you want ways to process and heal that don't have to involve talking about the specifics of what happened to you? Do you have a
child
who needs some extra support navigating life changes (i.e. parents separated/divorced, school changes, moving homes, loss of loved one)? I have tools to address a number of issues that get in the way of better functioning and a more satisfying life.

Raising
children
is by far the most important job that we are given in this life. When we are graced with the opportunity to parent a
child
, we have hope that we will raise them to be leaders, game changers, but most importantly we want them to be healthy, happy, and independent. Developmental stages can be tricky to navigate, and as parents, we many have lots of questions. My job is to provide a comfortable, non-judgemental environment for your
child
to explore his feelings and work through adversity. My diverse background in the fields of counseling and education provides me with unique insight into the world of
children
.

As a Registered Play Therapist (RPT), Play Therapy is primarily used with
children
and adolescents.
I see counseling as a process in which we come to understand and trust one another, work as a team to explore and define present problem situations, develop future goals for an improved life, and work in a systematic fashion toward realizing those goals. I provide an atmosphere of openness and trust in which you may choose to examine and change non-functional patterns and behaviors. I believe that as people become personally responsible for interactions and behavior, they are more capable of finding happiness and contentment.

As a parent of 2
children
with ADHD, I understand the struggle parents face in trying to ensure that their
children
have the needed resources to succeed academically and the pain felt when they experience failure despite our efforts.
I believe that everyone who walks into my office comes with their own unique personality and life experiences; I don't believe that the same approach works for everyone. People are so much more than the diagnosis or "label" they are given. Getting to know my clients and building a trusting relationship is the most important part of therapy. In the end, my goal is to help my clients rely on their own strengths and successes to help them through personal challenges.

Child Therapists
Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
