Welcome to PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING SERVICES. Human beings often struggle with unpleasant thoughts, feelings and sensations that can seem almost unbearable and impact our behaviors and relationships. When we are consumed with emotional pain and suffering, it becomes a challenge to attend to other important parts of our life. This may be an important time for you where you realize that your life has shrunk significantly and you would like to create a life 'worth living' for yourself again.

Sometimes life can be hard. We can get trapped living in the problem rather than the solution. Let's work together to make the changes you want. Although I enjoy working with all client types, my specialty is addiction. I particularly enjoy working with adolescent and young adult males who are struggling with "failure to launch" issues as they make the transition to becoming responsible adults. My motto is "people will not care how much you know until they know how much you care." Building a positive client/therapist relationship sets the basis for growth. There are a lot of very good therapists in Louisville. I am one of them.

I specialize in the stuff most people prefer to sweep under the rug; complex trauma, addiction, and unique mental health challenges. You know, the things that, if left unchecked, turn you into a flaming dumpster fire of a person. I also specialize in unique populations like polyamory and neurodivergent. Together, we’ll work through the darkness and find a way to make life suck a little less. Or, who knows, maybe even a lot less. Life’s chaotic, but we can still make progress while acknowledging that, sometimes, it’s a bit of a dumpster fire. The important part is that we start pulling you out of it.

Addiction is just a way of trying to get at something else. Something bigger. Call it transcendence if you want, but it’s a rat in a maze." Addiction, in its many forms, has been one of my passions since entering this field. I would love to work with anyone struggling to control behaviors that have gotten out of their control. There is power and healing when a client shares their deepest and darkest thoughts in hopes of inviting change and escaping shame. I want to step into the struggle alongside you.Grief is another one of my passions, I used IADC and EMDR to help people with their grief.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
