Every now and then life has a way of hitting us hard. I believe that when individuals enter counseling they are feeling gridlocked in their current situation and need assistance navigating their way out of the storms. I see counseling as a process by which I guide my client in exploration and identification of their needs. Through cognitive and somatic techniques I help raise clients' awareness of ineffective behaviors, toxic cycles, and distorted thinking patterns that may be standing in the way of the changes they desire in life. I believe that transformation begins when we slow down, tune into our bodies, and honor what comes up.

If you struggle with navigating your emotions, finding meaning/purpose, overcoming difficult or painful circumstances of the past (flashbacks, avoidance, fear, triggers) or even the present (arguments, emotional angst, numbness, irritation, anxiety, worry, hypervigilance), I want to support you. I believe that people have journeyed a long way to come to therapy, bringing with them vast and complicated histories. These histories are often fraught with moments of pain, disconnect, and isolation from one’s world and loved ones. I believe that therapy is a space for an ongoing relationship where one may feel safe, secure, and understood by the therapist as a means to feel connected once again the self, others, and the world.

The priority of any addict is to anesthetize the pain of living to ease the passage of day with some purchased relief.”- Russell Brand. Addiction, in its many forms, has been one of my passions since entering this field. I would love to work with anyone struggling to control behaviors that have gotten out of their control. There is power and healing when a client shares their deepest and darkest thoughts in hopes of inviting change and escaping shame. Shame and judgement keep us all locked away in our minds. I want to step into the struggle alongside you, and seek to help you find a way to a life full of freedom and recovery.

Sometimes life is just feels like too much to deal with. A painful life experience can leave you with overwhelming feelings of sadness and anxiety. You may feel that you can't talk to anyone about this and no one will understand. You just wish you could forget all of the bad memories and the things that bring you down.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
