When we feel weighed down by life, overwhelmed by responsibilities or unable to cope with our current circumstances, counseling provides a safe place. Through counseling, we'll explore your thoughts, feelings, beliefs and activities that are impacting you. We'll partner together to develop a personalized plan that will give you the skills to improve your situation. As a result of counseling people often find they are better able to understand themselves, improve their confidence, experience more satisfying relationships, and are more resilient when challenges occur.

I work with both children and adults and use CBT and client-centered techniques to help with issues such as anxiety, depression, and trauma.
I have a lot of experience working with survivors of trauma, including children within the foster care system and survivors of domestic violence. I am a good fit for those looking for a gentler approach, who may be intimidated by therapy or anxious to open up.

As a provider licensed in the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, I support children ages 10 and up, teens, and adults with emotional regulation, anxiety, and stress.
Sometimes life just feels heavy — maybe your thoughts won’t slow down, your mood feels off, or things with friends, family, or work haven’t been the same. You might be feeling stressed, frustrated, sad, or unsure of what to do next. I work with people ages 12 and up, creating a safe space where you can be yourself, explore what’s going on, and start finding a path forward that actually feels doable.

Hello there! My name is Nikki and I earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northern Kentucky University in 2023. I have been passionate about advocating for mental health for as long as I can remember. Working with me, the approach is straightforward: we all face challenges in life, often without the opportunity to express our true feelings. Many of us lack the space to discuss our mental health, even though human connection is essential for our well-being. This struggle to connect can lead to a lack of vulnerability.

I enjoy working with individuals of all ages, but I am especially passionate about working with children, families, and caregivers.
I utilize attachment theory, play therapy techniques, CBT, and TF-CBT through my practice; though I acknowledge therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and I am eager to work with you to determine how to best make therapy work for you. My approach is rooted in acceptance, empathy, and person-centered care.

Growing up and becoming an adult and figuring life out can be full of bumps in the road, detours and roadblocks. We have to learn how to navigate them and come out on the other side. I can help understand how your past has gotten you to this point and how you move forward. I am licensed in Kentucky with 20 years of professional work experience. In 2001, I graduated from the University of Louisville with a Master's Degree in Social Work. From 2002 until June 2022, I worked helping foster youth and clients in their own apartments learn how to handle the traumas they had experienced in their biological family.

FAQ - About Child Therapy
When does a child need to see a therapist?
Children naturally experience emotional ups and downs. Sometimes, though, they need support from a professional. A child may benefit from therapy if their emotions or behaviors change significantly within a short period of time. For example, if a child usually spends time with friends after school but begins isolating in their room, further inquiry is warranted. Other areas for concern include altered sleep patterns, lack of appetite, intense anger, irritability, or hopelessness, or developmental regression in young children (bedwetting, thumb-sucking).

What can a child therapist help with?
A therapist can help with any difficult experience a child may encounter growing up, including learning problems or anxiety related to school, relationship challenges with friends or parents, bullying, intense emotions or phobias, divorce and family dynamics, or the death of a pet or loved one. A therapist can help children process their experience and develop coping skills in an age-appropriate way

What therapy types are most suitable for children?
Children can benefit from different forms of therapy, including family therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and exposure therapy, depending on their condition. Play therapy is a great option for younger children who may not be able to fully articulate their feelings. In this approach, kids play with toys and games while a therapist observes and helps the child express their emotions and develop coping skills.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
