Everyone experiences change throughout their lives, it’s what keeps us human. From welcoming a new bundle of joy into the world to grieving the loss of loved ones, our lives are constantly in transition. However, change is difficult. Adjusting to change can bring about stress, anxiety, lowered self-esteem, and depression. Yet, in these moments of change is where personal growth is cultivated. As a certified first responder associate, I help clients navigate through processing the trauma and transitions they experience in the field. Have you experienced trauma or a life transition? If so, therapy can help.

I am passionate about helping individuals manage their mental health so that they can experience peace in their lives and relationships. I received my doctorate in family science and a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of Kentucky. I have a strong background in improving mental health and well-being in the context of relationships, especially when there is risk of self-harm. Many people define themselves and their family members in a limited way, often forgetting the vast potential that each person embodies.

My ideal client is someone who recognizes the need for change in their life, but may not know how to go about it to produce positive results. I treat adults and teens who are struggling with trauma, mood disorders, anxiety, and relationship /situationship issues. In addition, cultivating self-awareness and figuring out what goals you have is a big part of therapy no matter what you come in with and is something everyone could benefit from. Being open to talk about hard things is difficult, but also very brave. I see it as a privilege to get to work with those who are ready to make that step in a safe validating environment.

Book with me now on my website. I work with adults, older adults, and couples in transition. I believe people have all the tools they need to supersede surviving and grow into thriving. Some times it is in our confusion and life's difficult points that we cannot see which tools we need to utilize in order to have the peace and joy we strive for. Working with an understanding and patient counselor can be the key to becoming empowered and making the necessary changes needed to achieve your goals. In therapy, we will always design custom goals and strive to meet them, together.

I approach the counseling relationship with a team oriented mindset, pairing my knowledge and expertise with the client’s desire and dedication to effectuate lasting change in their quality of life. In my experience working with clients struggling with substance abuse most presenting concerns have deeply rooted primary causes and are impacted by the client’s stage of human development and environmental factors.

I have been working in the mental health field since October 2006, when I accepted my first position as Activities Therapist on a behavioral medicine center. I have now been practicing independently since 2011. I have seen a broad spectrum of clients throughout my time as a mental health counselor, children and adults, and I have learned through these experiences that the client holds the key. My efforts are to encourage empowerment and strength to implement the changes addressed during therapy, and improve your overall quality of life.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
