“Life is hard, but does it have to be THIS hard?” If you’ve ever had this thought, you are cordially invited to my office to file a formal complaint with the universe. I haven’t heard back about mine yet, but we can wait together. Meanwhile, let’s talk (a lot), laugh (when we can), cuss (if you want to), and cry (when we need to). We can learn to suffer less and enjoy more, even when life doesn’t play nice. How, though? In the face of platitudes like, "Don't worry, be happy," and "Never go to bed angry," it's no wonder we feel broken or weak-willed. No wonder we feel frustrated or hopeless in our relationships.

I’m a trauma therapist in Cincinnati and I’m at my best when working with clients who have found traditional talk therapy helpful at first, but eventually, ineffective. Trauma therapy is my specialty and I love working with trauma survivors. I also work with helpers, including fellow therapists, and anyone who is ready to do the work. I have a special interest in working with sufferers of chronic illness and life-threatening disease.

Maybe it’s the constant hum of worry or the weight of holding everything together. Maybe you’ve been through something hard and you’re still finding your footing. Or maybe life just feels heavy lately—and you don’t know why. This is your space to slow down, breathe, and begin again. I use EMDR to help the brain heal from pain, DBT to build balance, and CBT to shift patterns that keep you stuck. I support trauma survivors, healthcare workers, foster and adoptive parents, and bariatric clients on their healing journey. At Hearth & Haven, you don’t have to do it alone.

You might look put-together on the outside while feeling anxious, numb, overwhelmed, or disconnected inside. Maybe control has become your coping strategy—overachieving, perfectionism, overthinking, or strict rules around food/body image. When everyone assumes you’re fine, it can be hard to ask for help. If you’re here, you’re not looking for quick tips—you want to understand what’s happening beneath the surface and create lasting change.

Do you find that life has become unmanageable? Ever feel like you can't find that sense of balance or security you've been hoping for? Perhaps this is due to past traumas you can't seem to shake, or sleep issues that keep you from engaging the way you'd like to, or maybe you just aren't sure how to cope with stressors or emotions that arise.

I believe therapy should be a safe, welcoming, and grounding space where you can show up exactly as you are. You don't need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say before you walk through the door. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, navigating a life transition, or simply looking for support, you are welcome here. I strive to create a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment where you can openly share your story, explore your thoughts and emotions, and process what is happening in your life at your own pace.

Hello there! My name is Nikki and I earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northern Kentucky University in 2023. I have been passionate about advocating for mental health for as long as I can remember. Working with me, the approach is straightforward: we all face challenges in life, often without the opportunity to express our true feelings. Many of us lack the space to discuss our mental health, even though human connection is essential for our well-being. This struggle to connect can lead to a lack of vulnerability.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
