As a pediatric neuropsychologist and clinical psychologist, my goal is to determine why a child, adolescent or young adult is struggling to meet their developmental goals. The obstacles to their success may include medical, neurological, developmental, learning, behavioral or psychological conditions. In some cases it means providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to a child and/or parent consultation. In others it means using neuropsychological and psychological tests to see what is getting in their way and how that happens.
For testing, I typically take a day or two to observe behaviors and to get best performances on tests. To complete the puzzle, I then analyze the results and clinical information gathered as well as history to formulate or confirm a diagnosis. Most important, I make recommendations to address the problem and promote success and well being.
Children do not self-refer, but they often know that there is a problem. I let kids know that testing or therapy may not be easy or fun, but I'm committed to making a positive difference in their lives. My goal for parents is to help them to understand their child's strengths and weaknesses so that they can support and advocate for them.
