My counseling is grounded in Attachment Theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness , and the Gospel.
My philosophy of therapy is holistic, meaning I believe people are made up of many parts (mind, body, and spirit) and interact in many different environments. These parts are not independent of one another but work together. I am a Christian. I believe we are created for relationships. We know ourselves in the context of our relationships. Healing occurs through restoring relationships and refining our interactions within those relationships. My approach to therapy is from a systemic perspective. People work in relational systems and each person in the relationship is important to the balance of the whole system.

Any symptoms or problem you're experiencing does not define who you are as an individual. Life is challenging on our best days. Sometimes these challenging days turn into weeks, maybe months, if not longer. If there is a problem or symptoms that are keeping you from moving forward in life, or enjoying anything in general, I would like to meet with you. Together we will work on the challenge(s) or symptom(s) that are preventing you from experiencing more enjoyment in life.

Through CBT and mindfulness , it is my goal to help your teen work through challenging emotions, possess better self-regulation in moments of distress, improve self-esteem, and feel more connected in relationships with family and peers.
Are you a parent of a teen who is going through an emotional whirlwind? Does your teen have emotional outbursts seemingly out of nowhere? Does your teen seem distant, sad and disconnected? Is your teen having trouble expressing him/herself or connecting with peers? Being a parent can be the most meaningful and fulfilling experience we will ever have in our lives, and also sometimes the most challenging, exhausting, and emotionally overwhelming. The truth is that no matter how strongly we love our teens, and how powerfully we want the best for them, life's challenges can still get in the way of our teens thriving at their best.

I believe that through mindfulness , self-care and wellness we are capable of developing healthy coping strategies to overcome life's challenges–at any age. There is hope. We are not our mistakes. Our triggers and trigger responses have roots back to childhood. Through therapy, it is my goal to walk beside you as you explore those roots and make meaningful connections in the pursuit of healing. I have had the opportunity to help individuals involved within the criminal justice system as they transitioned back into the community following incarceration. My experience also includes over six years in the elementary school setting.

"People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, 'Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner.' I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds." -Carl R. Rogers. I appreciate the intrinsic value of every person's journey. As your therapist, I place high value on creating a non-judgmental, safe haven that allows for each individual to address life's challenges and to achieve personal growth.

If you're tired of pain keeping you from happiness, CBT, EMDR, Gottman's Method, Attachment Theory, Mindfulness , EFT, Systemic Family Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy are tools that can help.
You want to be seen, heard, and understood. Most therapists do that. But what if therapy is supposed to provide more? Therapy should help you understand your life story, resolve your emotional difficulties, strengthen your relationships, and fulfill your potential-- all so you can cultivate a life you love. I've helped hundreds of people facing difficult paths of grief, anger, fear, conflict, and shame reach a deeper experience of gratitude, peace, love, and fulfillment in their lives. Therapy is hard work, but not harder than living with unaddressed pain and in dysfunctional patterns.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
