My expertise with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder also includes working with adults who have experienced more recent trauma (combat, domestic violence,
assault
, etc.
I believe psychotherapy is a mixture of psychoeducation (providing information to help people develop new coping and relationship skills), emotional processing (learning to identify and work through uncomfortable feelings), and corrective emotional experience (using the counseling relationship as a safe place to experiment with new interpersonal skills). I utilize a mixture of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (addressing how our thoughts and beliefs impact our emotional experience, self-image, and behavior); Family Systems Therapy (helping people gain insight into characteristic relationship patterns); and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (understanding how ways of coping developed earlier in life may not serve us well in the present).

I work with survivors of
sexual abuse
and
assault
and those affected by anaphylactic food allergies. People who've experienced these traumas often begin feeling a sense of losing control over their lives. I want you to know that you can heal from trauma and I can help you with that process. I will work with you to figure out how to mange anxiety, fear, sleep and relationship problems or any other symptoms you're experiencing. We can then work together to decide which approach to trauma processing is best for you.

I enjoy working with individuals and couples, and with issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, infidelity,
sexual abuse
, grief, faith dilemma's, or chronic pain.
Passion...not everyone has it or even knows where to begin to find it. So much gets in the way of it, such as life, work, raising a family, running a business, being a single parent, saving a marriage, surviving grief...or just surviving. I want to help you reconnect with those parts of yourself that have been put aside, help to restore meaningful relationships, self-worth, self-respect, and to assist in finding passion in living, while overcoming obstacles of grief, addiction, trauma, guilt, or fear. Let's get started! I work from an Attachment framework, NARM, CBT, EFT and other modalities including Faith (when requested).

Hello there! Life has felt overwhelming for many of us these past few years, and I'm so happy you are here looking for some extra support. Therapy can provide a nonjudgmental and objective space to help process the stressors of life. You might be here because you are dealing with things like emotional detachment, insomnia, nightmares, avoidance, irritability, depression, and intrusive thoughts (which can all be reactions to painful life events). Our brains can and do heal just like other parts of our bodies, and that healing can have big impacts on not only ourselves but those we love.

As a therapist my goal is to provide a safe and honest environment where all clients feel empowered. Therapy can be one of the most powerful gifts we can give ourselves and our loved ones. This experience can open doors to better understanding of family and transitional situations, assist with development of communication skills and provide valuable tools for coping with trauma or other challenges in life. My client-first approach involves working together to understand your unique experiences and assist you in achieving personal goals. I strive to be an ally, advocate, and conscientious facilitator during our time together.

I am honored to have had the privilege over the past 20 years to work with many amazing people. I specialize in working with trauma and abuse, PTSD (including military and first responders). I also work with Depression, Bipolar, Anxiety disorders, OCD, and Adjustment disorders. I use a variety of treatment modalities, including EMDR, CBT, DBT, and art therapy, client centered; most importantly is the relationship and trust felt between the client and myself. I believe in the resiliency of the mind, body, spirit, and I am thankful to have the opportunity to walk beside those while they find their way to peace and happiness.

Almost all of us have had adverse experiences or trauma in our lives that shape how we live and interact with others. Regardless of your trauma or experiences, as a trauma-trained therapist I will help guide you through healing. I will not pretend to know more about your life than you. I will not judge you for who you are. I will not determine what healing means for you. I will not be a gatekeeper to accessing the resources you need.

Trauma affects our brains in ways that can make us feel stuck in constant survival mode. It can be exhausting. I offer strategies to help clients process their experiences, cope more effectively, and move forward with their lives. You can find relief! And you don’t have to do it alone. Your needs are unique to your story, so your treatment should be unique as well. Whether the root of the issue is behavioral, emotional, traumatic, or complicated, I aim to help my clients make this discovery for themselves and collaborate in therapy, so it best fits their needs and values.

Virginia Satir once said, "There are five freedoms: The freedom to see and hear what is; The freedom to say what you feel and think; The freedom to feel what you actually feel; The freedom to ask for what you want; The freedom to take risks on your own behalf." Therapy can be a safe and nonjudgmental space to process, change, understand, and heal.

It’s natural to wonder if and how change is possible, especially when feeling confused, uncertain, and, oftentimes, alone. Chances are that you have already tried many things to help yourself and want to know how therapy can help you find what you are seeking.

I enjoy working with a variety of different folks from varied background, and with a wide range of concerns. This might mean that you are ready to look at something that has been around for a while or it might be a new difficulty in your life. Clients should be ready to work and to lean into what can be a challenging process. Change is hard and it often takes more than the 1 hour a week we meet to see the changes you want in your life. Therapy does not offer a quick fix, but together we can often make big changes in relatively short amount of time. Additionally, I enjoy incorporating assessment and trauma sensitive yoga in my work.

Has trauma, anxiety, or depression overtaken your life? Asking for help takes a tremendous amount of courage. Whether you are a child or an adult, we will all need help at some point in our lives. One of my favorite quotes is “The greatest source of human suffering is the lies we tell ourselves”. Are you telling yourself that you are alone, losing control, or going crazy? Your problems are normal. And help is possible.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
