I commonly treat issues related to anxiety, self-esteem,
family
dynamics, boundaries, communication & relationships.
Do you ever feel like you are wearing an emotional mask? After another long day of pretending, you break down, realizing how lonely you are & feel like nobody even cares. You have friends but you feel like you have no one to talk to about what is going on in your head. You feel stuck. You feel isolated. You want to feel safe, seen & heard.

The journey towards healing can feel overwhelming or impossible, but with support and guidance, desired change and growth can be achieved. I believe an important part of therapy is creating a safe and open environment. I strive to build a strong trusting relationship so you are able to learn, grow, and be vulnerable in order to start the healing process.

I specialize in working with adults and individuals struggling with anxiety, relational conflict, OCD tendencies,
family
struggles, LGBTQ+ and spiritual abuse.
Are you overwhelmed with anxiety and not sure what to do about it? If so, you are not alone. Whether your anxiety is new or you have been struggling with it for awhile, therapy can help you understand where it is coming from and how to feel more settled. I believe we all have experiences that leave us lost and disconnected from ourselves and the people around us. In therapy, we can work to give you the space to process your past, explore your feelings and understand your experiences. This will help us know where your anxiety stems from and how to help it.

I draw from culturally sensitive and evidence-based therapies that focus on attachment, trauma-informed care, and
family
systems.
Life can hit us with challenges, whether they come in the form of unexpected change, unwelcome events, or damage to an important relationship … maybe even the relationship with yourself. During the most difficult days of my own life, key individuals offered me life-giving support, teaching me that I wasn’t the problem – it was the way I chose to cope with it that required the attention. That shift in my thinking opened a path to healing and greater wholeness. It is now my privilege and honor to provide a safe, respectful space where people are fully accepted as they are.

With over 25 years of experience, I focus on addictions (licensed addictions counselor), emotional regulation skills (to decrease emotional reactions and increase thoughtful responses), and
family
systems (to include marriage &
family therapy
).
"You're fired Dr. Gaal! We don't need you anymore" are glorious moments in the life of this therapist. My clients have met their goals and are embarking on successful futures. It is my belief that all people want satisfying lives and everyone can achieve it. Each of us has a unique definition of what is "satisfying." Relationships (marital, familial, collegial, communal), careers, and a sense of purpose seem to be some driving motivators. By addressing the obstacles (past hurts, betrayals, addictions) and enhancing these important areas (our relationships, careers, purpose), we can make the changes to create lives of fulfillment.

Our ability to “emotionally detach” while on the job can have extremely negative effects on personal and
family
relationships.
Years of deep, heavy, or significant trauma? Feeling broken and unfixable? You are the person I want to work with! This trauma causes intrusive thoughts, memories, flashbacks, a short temper, reckless behavior, or a negative emotional state. We will do real work to understand why your behaviors and thoughts are the way they are, and we will find solutions and answers. I do not believe therapy should last years and my sessions reflect this.

Are you feeling stuck in your life right now? Are you feeling overwhelmed with your life circumstances and not sure what to do next? Are you going through some changes and transitions in your life and feel uncertain about what direction to take? Have you decided that you want things to be different but find yourself unsure about how to make that happen or how to make changes last?

Through my own exploration of
family
history and its impact on our attachment styles, I find meaning in exploring this with my clients through attachment work and emotionally focused approaches.
I know that therapy isn't one-size-fits-all. We all face challenges in life; some endure more than others, but you're not expected to handle it all on your own. I'm passionate about providing a safe environment that is validating, engaging, and focused on positive change to help both children and adults heal through their own unique therapeutic journey. My purpose includes creating a safe and accepting environment for children and families to grow from and to feel inspired by their own capabilities. I earned my graduate degree at Friends University, and I also have extensive training in the practice of Child-Centered Play Therapy.

As a licensed professional counselor specializing in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and mindfulness, I have had the honor of helping both adults and children navigate various concerns including depression, anxiety, anger management, self-esteem concerns, conflicts with
family
and peers, couples issues, personality disorders, trauma (PTSD), and grief.
We are all unique, multidimensional puzzle pieces trying to find where we fit. As such, we all have countless ways to define ourselves. However you choose to define yourself, I am here to help you throughout your journey. I know what it means to find everyday to be an uphill struggle, as my own journey had me move from my home in South Korea and endeavor to adapt to a new life in Kansas City. I have experienced the friction of adjusting to a new environment and the feeling of not belonging. I have also discovered for myself how to thrive in such an environment, and would like to help you learn how to thrive in your own environment.

I valued my role in supporting the WHOLE
family
unit: the patient as well as siblings and caregivers.
It can feel overwhelming to be juggling our busy lives: work, school, activities, meetings, appointments, and household needs. Especially when we're faced with a new stressor, or something traumatic, it can feel taxing to even find the right support. As a board certified & registered clinical Art Therapist, I am specially trained to utilize art to support our wellbeing and to facilitate coping. In particular, I see kids, teens & young adults in my private practice and we work on navigating emotions such as anxiety and depression, growing our self-awareness, self-regulation & anything life has thrown at us, big or small.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
