attachment-based
and includes experiential, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioral work.
Welcome! Chances are you or a loved one has experienced feelings or events where a counselor might be beneficial. You are not alone. Joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, and confusion and clarity are part of being human. Whether you prefer movies, television, or books; the most resonating stories address these common themes and reflect the depth and breadth of life. As such, your own story is naturally filled with such complexities. Whether your experience includes anxiety, depression, shame, loneliness, grief, life transitions, or conflict in relationships; may you hear the gentle whisper “Courage, dear heart”.

Have you ever found yourself wanting to be closer to someone, but pushing them away the moment they want more? Pursuing relationships where you are constantly the one reaching out? Parenting your child and getting so angry over something minor, that you feel irrational? You may have attachment issues or unresolved trauma. Trauma comes in all shapes & sizes: Sometimes it's an obvious life altering event or abuse. But often it's more subtle: the hurts we experience in life that create lasting effects on our self worth & relationships. Attachment is the therapy word for connection; it's the foundation for all of our relationships.

It can be so hard to connect to the people closest to you and yet if you can just get past the nasty cycle, hurts, and anxiety, they are the most rewarding to be with. I have a deep passion to work with couples who want to build on their intimacy and relationship. I also love to walk along side those who struggle with anxiety, depression, and trauma and help people feel like they can breathe again.

As a Registered Play Therapist, I work with children 1 year and older with a variety of presenting concerns: anxiety, ADHD, social difficulties, academic struggles, behavioral concerns, divorce, life transitions, self-esteem, anger, and grief. My passion lies with children and their families who have experienced trauma, abuse or attachment difficulties. Recent brain research has proven that the absence of a secure attachment with a primary caregiver negatively impacts the child's normal developmental process. In order to ensure inner change, my play therapy work often initially focuses on developing a positive, consistent, and nurturing relationship with an attachment figure.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
