Men's Issues Therapists in Miami County, KS
Does anger, sadness or anxiety get in the way of your relationships, jobs or general happiness? I work with clients to process these feelings and the pain they can cause. We all carry baggage from our childhoods and pasts, worsened by the hardships we endure as adults and from the inevitable trials of daily life, but they do not define who we are. Anger is a common response to these issues but does not have to interfere with our lives. Having worked for over a decade as a first responder, I know first hand how trauma impacts us, especially in our ability to control impulses, frustration and anger. You do not need to suffer alone.

I work with people struggling with balance, feeling a sense of meaning and fulfillment. Whatever their particular struggle, from interpersonal issues, trauma, changes in life, struggle with identity, emotive control and expression, and self-sabotage-to more extreme expressions of those issues resulting in self harm or suicidal thoughts, my goal is to help every person that I come in contact with build a life worth living. This is accomplished through targeted interventions tailored to that person, their concerns, personality and strengths.

Sometimes life brings difficulties we never imagined we would have to deal with. These are situations, circumstances and events like parenting a difficult child, experiencing anxiety or depression, and problems at school, work, or home that we just don't feel equipped to deal with. Many of us expect ourselves to be able to resolve these difficulties and when we can't we feel defeated. Worry, distress, and apathy have run their course and now it's time to get help. I am sensitive to your situation and can help you find relief.

Sometimes things happen that profoundly change the way we experience life. Whether expected or not, life transitions can leave us feeling anxious, angry, alone, or depressed. Events like the loss of a loved one, infertility, chronic illness, leaving home, becoming a parent, and divorce or separation alter the way that we view and react to the world around us. My goal is to help you process the many emotions that accompany the adjustments in your life and discover new strengths and experiences that come along with it.

You can’t change what you aren’t aware of, and it’s hard to notice what’s keeping you stuck when you’re in the middle of it. Maybe it's anxiety that doesn’t let up, the weight of a relationship ending, conflict in your family, or patterns you don’t fully understand but keep repeating that can leave you drained and unsure of what comes next. Together, we'll make sense of these struggles and create a path toward healing and clarity

My passion is families, the building block upon which society is built. By healing families, we heal the world. I specialize in couples therapy, which improves not only the couple but the entire family as a result. I specialize in working with teenagers, helping them with depression, social anxiety, and life coaching. I specialize in treating trauma, a taxing burden that no one should have to carry through life, a burden that sadly so often goes untreated.

My ideal client is someone who has been carrying a lot emotionally, mentally, and often quietly. They may be navigating trauma, chronic stress, parenting challenges, maternal or parental mental health concerns, or the long-term impact of systems that were not designed to support them. They are often strong, capable, and responsible for others, yet feel exhausted, disconnected, or overwhelmed beneath the surface. What they want most is not to be “fixed,” but to feel safe, understood, and supported as they make sense of their experiences and move toward healing, stability, and growth.

Challenges in life are essential to human growth and development, but sometimes stressful events in life can become overwhelming. Anxiety, depressed moods, anger, irritability, acting out of character, and even addictive and/or compulsive type behaviors are common responses once internal coping skills have been exhausted. These symptoms and behaviors can have devastating effects on personal relationships, work, family, and many other life domains. However, with the assistance of a skilled and experienced therapist, these symptoms can be managed, and relief from emotional suffering is possible.

Mike works primarily with men who struggle with anger, emotional shutdown, or relationship conflict—and who are frustrated by therapy that feels passive or disconnected from real change. Many of the men he works with are capable and responsible, yet feel stuck repeating the same patterns in their relationships and inner lives.
His approach integrates cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with psychodynamic depth work to support both practical change and deeper self-understanding. Therapy is active, collaborative, and grounded in personal responsibility, emotional strength, and meaningful forward movement.

Serving: KS, MO & FL clients. I am an African-American clinician whose work is deeply rooted in serving Black and Brown communities, as well as individuals who live in close proximity to or are shaped by these cultural realities. I approach therapy with the understanding that our psychological wounds are not created in a vacuum. Historical trauma, systemic oppression, cultural expectations, masculinity norms, faith traditions, and survival strategies all shape how distress shows up in our lives. These factors make our experiences meaningfully different from those of the general population—and they deserve to be understood as such.

I know what it feels to be the smart, self-aware one that people turn to for advice but still feel stuck your own life. You overthink and lose yourself in relationships and it can feel miserable and disorienting. I help individuals and couples break unhealthy patterns, guide them back to their inner wisdom, and communicate with confidence so they can feel more secure and fulfilled. I don't like cold, detached approaches to therapy - you should feel like there's an actual person on your journey with you and someone who's like "Yup, I've totally been there."

Neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ folks often go through life engaging with narratives rooted in shame, doubt, and societal pressure to conform and mask themselves (in confusing and contradictory ways, no less). With diagnosis and mental health being difficult-to-access resources for neurodivergent and queer people, it can be hard to find a therapist that feels safe to open up to. It can be even harder to find a therapist that understands those issues themselves, especially from personal experience.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
