I specialize in supporting children, teenagers and adults and couples with depression, anxiety, trauma and self-harm behaviors. I understand that the process for seeking therapy services can be grueling; with long wait times for appointments, or finding someone that accepts your insurance and, most importantly, finding someone you connect with. I may not be a fit for you but I am here if you are willing to try.

Anyone can slay a dragon, he told me, but try waking up every morning and loving the world all over again. That's what takes a real hero. The writer and artist Brian Andreas' message epitomizes heroism.
Everyone struggles and encounters obstacles. During times of hardship, heartache, or conflict all of us need validation and empathy. Being seen, known, and understood are universal human needs. Therapy can help us find tools and inner resources to navigate difficulties with support and strength.

I integrate somatic trauma therapies including EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), NARM, and Somatic Experiencing.
You may look strong, capable, and put together on the outside while quietly feeling overwhelmed or alone on the inside. Many of the women I work with are high functioning and self aware, yet feel anxious, emotionally exhausted, or disconnected beneath the surface. Open Invite Therapy was created for women who know what it feels like to feel left out or unseen. I believe healing begins when you feel safe enough to belong exactly as you are, allowing your nervous system to soften and deeper change to become possible.

We are all unique, multidimensional puzzle pieces trying to find where we fit. As such, we all have countless ways to define ourselves. However you choose to define yourself, I am here to help you throughout your journey. I know what it means to find everyday to be an uphill struggle, as my own journey had me move from my home in South Korea and endeavor to adapt to a new life in Kansas City. I have experienced the friction of adjusting to a new environment and the feeling of not belonging. I have also discovered for myself how to thrive in such an environment, and would like to help you learn how to thrive in your own environment.

I'm skilled in CBT, family, Gestalt & EMDR therapy.
I treat people who suffer from panic disorders (and many other problems) with cognitive-behavioral therapy. I've studied 6 years of CBT at the Menninger Foundation and I have also studied at the Beck Institute in Philadelphia. Panic is basically a "false alarm". Panic happens when a person's body is producing powerful fight or flight chemicals at the wrong time. The body responds as if there is an emergency when there is no physical threat. The intense changes in heart rate and breathing etc. become subject to catastrophic misinterpretations, like "I'm dying" or "I'm losing control". These scary thoughts produce even more chemicals.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
