We all need to be seen and understood, and it’s my goal to make therapy a space where that happens. I approach therapy from a place of getting that it's important to make sense of your experiences, know & feel that you are valid, & have a way to move forward feeling grounded in your authentic truth. I often work with people who have experienced trauma in relationships, a lack of emotional support in childhood, religious trauma, and marginalization. I can help with if you've been struggling to make changes you want in your life and relationships, have been overwhelmed by emotions, or don't ever know what you're even feeling.

What does it mean to feel safety and connection? As motivated individuals we strive to have our social, emotional, and physical needs met. We strive to advocate for equity with ourselves, friends, families, and societal systems. The journey towards safety and connection can be overwhelming, tiresome, and different for each person. Have you ever pondered questions like… where do I start? When was a time I felt safety and connection? Do I feel whole? If you have asked yourself or other’s the above question, you might be ready to start to find those answers for yourself.

If you are looking for acceptance, understanding, and an authentic, compassionate perspective in therapy you have found it. I am passionate, flexible, curious, non-judgmental and open in my work. I have found this helps me connect with the distressed, anxious, uncertain and yes "HOPEFUL" person that has taken the great leap of faith in seeking help for their child or for self.

My name is Dr. Caleb Stephens, and I am an Intersectional Clinician. The reality of therapy is that it is inaccessible to most, and the majority of therapists gear their therapy around themselves, and not around the needs of the client, nor the layers of identity that exist. I am not a traditional therapist, as I am also a community organizer and educator.

I firmly believe that those who make the most impact are often those who have walked a similar path themselves. Clients often say that they haven't felt understood or even understand theirselves. It took me a long time to shift from a place of misunderstood toward a place of confidence. My approach to therapy is rooted in empathy, creativity, and a deep respect for each person’s unique story. People in today's society need someone they can trust. I'm a stranger. You shouldn't trust me. Know I will work to earn that trust from you. Because the relationship between a client and therapist needs to be solid to make great work happen.

My area of focus is working with youth and adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
I believe that everyone, young and old, has a right to feel good about themselves. Sometimes, things happen in life that leave us feeling unprepared for the road ahead. We look in the mirror and are unhappy with what we see. We want to feel good about ourselves but don't know how. Past trauma can leave us vulnerable to the environment around us. That is when we need help in discovering who we are and how we want to live our lives. I will use my knowledge and expertise to help you find your best self and live your best life.

A feeling rises and something in you moves quickly to manage it. You explain it away. Go quiet. Become analytical. Apologize. Try to make yourself easier to hold. These responses often begin as protection. But eventually, they can create distance from the connection and sense of self you long for. I work with adults and couples to slow these moments down with curiosity, care, and a bit of boldness, helping make room for more authenticity, emotional safety, and connection.

I am currently accepting new clients on Tuesdays from 1:00 - 7:00, online and in person, and on Thursdays from 3:00 - 7:00, online only. My ideal client is a person finding themself monitoring other people's feelings, worrying they may be 'too much' or feeling like they don't know what they're doing with their life. They want to reconnect with their true self, live confidently, curiously and compassionately. My ideal client is someone who was not taught that everything is figure-out-able, but as an adult, is starting to wonder if that's really true.

Do you wonder, sometimes lying on the bed at the mid hour of night, that life could be different: maybe lighter, with a little bit more hope; and your pounding heart can slow down and feel some peace; when you look out, you can smile and sense trust? Is there part of you that want to embark on a journey of healing and growth, to build nourishing relationships with your own self, with others, and with the life at large, to lay the foundation for a life of meaning and joy?

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
